YesAsia Editorial Description

Long before Shaolin Soccer, Hong Kong's king of comedy Stephen Chow has already experimented with the crossover of martial arts and sports in the 1991 action comedy Legend of the Dragon. Directed and produced by Danny Lee (The Killer), the film stars Chow as the simple-minded son of a kung fu master who happens to be a pool genius, and features action choreography by Corey Yuen and Yuen Wah. Another highlight in the crew has to be Chow's frequent collaborator Lee Lik Chi (Love on Delivery, Flirting Scholar), who serves as executive director here.

Lung (Stephen Chow) lives in the Tai O village with his kung fu instructor father Fei Hung (Yuen Wah). On the order of Fei Hung, Lung goes to the city of Hong Kong trying to make it big with his dodgy uncle Yan (Leung Kar Yan). Lung shows his talents at playing pool so Yan decides to make money off him. When they lose the Tai O family land in a gamble with the gangsters, Lung's lover Mo (Teresa Mo) lends him the chance to win it back by challenging the world champion Jimmy White.

Legend of the snooker-playing dragon Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Movies released for the Chinese New Year can be slapdash affairs, long on comedy, short on common sense. There is nothing slapdash about director Danny Lee's "Legend of the Dragon", a 1991 New Year film; it is slickly produced, relentlessly funny, and boasts a marvelous ensemble cast, led by the inimitable Stephen Chow. Chow plays Chow Siu Lung (named after Bruce Lee Siu Lung), who is the layabout son of Chow Fei Hung (Yuen Wah), a martial arts expert from the fishing village of Tai O who tells everyone within earshot that he was buddies with Bruce Lee.

When a CNN film crew arrives in Tai O to interview the elder Chow, he orders his son Siu Lung to put on an exhibition of martial arts skill with his fellow student Mo (Teresa Mo). Siu Lung makes a mess of things, convincing the CNN crew that Chow Fei Hung is a fraud. Fei Hung becomes so enraged with his son that he packs him off to the big city of Hong Kong in the company of Siu Lung's Uncle Yun (Leung Kar Yan). Uncle Yun is an inept loan shark; he loves the high life, but always is short of cash because the people to whom he lends (including Amy Yip) simply disregard him. His opulent lifestyle and non-paying borrowers leave him deep in debt to nasty triad Boss Fong (Lung Fong).

Much to Yun's surprise, he learns that Siu Lung is exceptionally skilled at snooker. When Boss Fong loses patience with him, Yun schemes to evade his debts by offering Fong a proposition -- a winner-takes-all snooker tournament between Siu Lung and the player of Fong's choosing. Boss Fong is no fool; he selects snooker world champ Jimmy White to play on his behalf. And the stakes for the tournament come as a shocking surprise to Siu Lung's long-suffering father back in Tai O.

Stephen Chow's loose-limbed, motor-mouthed comic genius is mined for all its worth. The supporting cast is brilliant, with particularly hilarious performances from Teresa Mo and Yuen Wah. There may be a bit too much snooker in the closing scenes, but "Legend of the Dragon" is guaranteed to leave you with a smile on your face. Highly recommended.
