YesAsia Editorial Description
Internationally acclaimed Korean writer-director Ki-duk Kim (SPRING, SUMMER, FALL, WINTER... AND SPRING) has created a masterful, wholly original drama with 3-IRON, which follows the trials and tribulations of an odd young man, Tae-suk (Hee Jae), who spends his days putting flyers on people's doors just so he can check who hasn't taken them down after a day or two; believing those families to be away, he breaks into their homes and settles in for a while, cooking, cleaning, watching television, and sleeping, all done with an intoxicating charm. But one day he is caught by a troubled young woman, Sun-hwa (Seung-yeon Lee), whose husband, Min-kyu (Hyuk-ho Kwon), abuses her mentally and physically; when the husband returns home, Tae-suk uses the man's 3-iron to hit golf balls at him. Sun-hwa then goes off with Tae-suk, joining him on his journey to empty houses, where they pretend to be part of the vacationing family. But when they walk into an apartment and find a man dead, their world changes despite their attempts to protect it. It's at that point that director Kim really starts having fun. 3-IRON is an intense, enjoyable, mystical film filled with subtlety and tenderness. That is especially surprising since the two main characters, who find solace in each other's company, never speak a word.
"The movie camera is able to make the impossible look natural and the ordinary seem strange....Mr. Kim is a master of such estrangement, and 3-IRON is a teasing, self-conscious and curiously heartfelt demonstration of his mischievous formal ingenuity." - A. O., Scott (New York Times Critic), New York Times, 04/29/2005
"Alternately witty, caustic, tender and endlessly imaginative and unpredictable, this latest film from one of Korea's most idiosyncratic and prolific directors is as confident as its resourceful hero, Tae-suk." - Kevin, Thomas (Film critic), Los Angeles Times, 04/29/2005
"3-IRON is like a Raymond Carver story that slowly, inexorably takes on the dimensions of a ghostly fairy tale."
- Owen, Gleiberman (Entertainment Weekly Critic), Entertainment Weekly, 05/13/2005
"[T]his offbeat little charmer ends with a reality-blurring supernatural twist that hangs in the air like a kiss."
- Stephen, Dalton (Uncut Critic), Uncut, 08/01/2005
"[T]his multi-layered love story rings true with sweetness..."
- Marie, Iida (Premiere Critic), Premiere, 10/01/2005
"[A] deliberately paced, hypnotic drama....[With] a beguiling effect."
- Matthew, Leyland (Film Critic), Sight and Sound, 03/01/2006

Great Director!
| I avoided this film for the longest time because the idea of breaking into people's homes just bother me a lot. I'm very glad that I watched it. The film is simple, bizarre and surrealistic at times, but the loneliness, emotional neglects and abuses in society are all too real. The ending and the one sentence commentary is a surprise. It sets Kim Ki Duk apart. I think that he is a great director with substance. I have high respect for him. Both Jae Hee and the very pretty Lee Seung Yeon did an excellent job and they were well suited for this film. The video quality is very good. It's highly recommended! |

Finding solace in silence
|
"3-Iron" tells of a battered wife married to a brutal and thoroughly selfish husband and of a seemingly aimless young man who breaks into homes only to live in them, not to steal anything (other than the food he eats). The young man breaks into the battered wife's home and, after he is kind to her, they strike up one of the most unusual friendships in film history. Perhaps afraid to spoil this weird kinship they share with a jarring note, they remain silent with each other. Eventually they are caught for trespassing in someone's home. The wife is returned to her husband. Will the relationship with the young man now come to an end? How "3-Iron" answers this question takes on an almost mystical quality that turns the movie into something akin to an allegorical folk tale. Not everything works in this film, but I must give director Kim major kudos for following the audacity of his unique vision, for shying away from what in other hands might have become prurient, and for creating a beautiful tale of two wounded people reaching out to each other. Very highly recommended. |

OK but......
OK but......
| I get it, the movie is taking risks and artistically it is interesting but unless you are going into with this in mind, the entertainment value is not that high. It is quite frustrating that the two main characters do not talk in the entire movie. Which is fine, but there is no explanation as to why. Why are they breaking into people's houses and doing good deeds. Is he a hallucination she has created, it seems to be the case. I felt the movie was a bit slow and a bit boring but that was just me. I realize it has gotten stellar reviews so if you are intrigued by unique and artistic storylines then this one will suit you just fine. |

IT'S DIFFERENT
| I DO LIKE JAE HEE'S ACTING. ITS TO TOO HARD TO ACT WITHOUT SAYING A SINGLE WORD...AS IN. MAYBE THAT'S WHY HE WON THE BEST NEW ACTOR. DIFFICULT TO CONVEY A MESSAGE IF YOUR FACIAL EXPRESSION IS NOT GOOD, KUDOS FOR JAE HEE. LOVE THIS MOVIE, DIFFERENT FROM CHUNYANG. MORE MOVIES FOR HIM, PLEASE |

thought provoking
| i bought this video when it came out in 04 and had mixed feeling about it. it was vague at the ending but well done and very beaultiful in the portraying of the charactors feelings. i lent it to a friend and never got it back. i saw it in the foreign movie section and deicided to see it again. this is definately a see again movie. you will get more out of the next time you see it no matter how many times that is. it is open to your own interpretation and imagination which may change how you think of it the next time you see it. it is so complex and expresses so mush without words. i am definately going to buy it again. the actors were perfect for each other and their roles. it is not for everyones taste but if you like it, you will love it. |
