Beginning with his funny talk show in 2005, Jan Lamb's stand-up comedy gigs have become something of an event for the Hong Kong entertainment scene. His September 2009 blockbuster shows 30Mething...Yes, I...Do are already his fourth series, and this time the versatile entertainer made a truckload of laughing-out-loud fun of the sacred subject of marriage. He designed the show mascot, the long-nosed puppet "Lambido", and as any followers of Chinese showbiz would expect, the secret weddings of superstars Andy Lau, Leon Lai, and Miriam Yeung were fair game for Jan's humorous sarcasm. Highlights of the show include the appearances of guest stars Eric Kot and singer Kay Tse, plus Jan singing his wife Cass Phang's memorable bridal anthem "The Little Plaything".
The double-disc DVD set comes with the music video of Jan's duet with G.E.M. "Smoking, Drinking, Swearing". First-press version comes with a limited cellphone strap.

Jan's marriage rhapsody

A Pinocchio with three eyes and a protruding nose makes the perfect logo for Jan Lamb's 2009 stand-up comedy shows, as it amusingly references the shows' theme of commitment - or the lack thereof. As Jan's last few comedy series proved, performing to a live audience is a more suitable outlet for his wry sense of humor and comic showmanship. This time, he again put on a highly entertaining show, alternating his sidesplitting jokes with parody songs and dance performances, peppered with costumed dancers, impressive sets and props, some reality TV elements, and other surprises. Titled Yes, I...do, the show's main subject revolves around marriage, a subject that allows much room for Jan to wreak comedy havoc in. Without spoiling the fun, let's just say that he satirizes everything from the dating game to all kinds of nuptial rituals, like the trials and tribulations the groom has to go through in order to get his bride, and various laughable cliches of the wedding banquet. The celebrity secret unions that were sensationally exposed last year are inevitably made into gags. Yielding the most laughs, however, is when Jan relates his observations of the differences between guys and gals, and couples before and after marriage. More jokes come at the expense of his fellow Hong Kong people, from the manner they speak to the ways they work and live. The second half takes a different format, and it's no longer just Jan's solo talk show. Eric Kot makes a welcome appearance, sharing the stage with Jan to the delight of the Softhard fans. The funny duo conduct a wedding ceremony with a real couple and interview their families. This part kind of drags the pace down, taking the spotlight unnecessarily away from Jan for a bit too long. Fortunately, another guest performer, Kay Tse, makes up for that with her lovely presence. This part features even more singing courtesy of her, but the best music performance still belongs to our protagonist, as Jan belts out the memorable wedding song originally sung by his singer wife Cass Phang, while descending upon the stage riding a giant wedding ring! |
