YesAsia Editorial Description
The truth of the matter is that the parents are pretending; they actually do hate their own children! The standouts in this ragtag group of dysfunctional families include gambling addict Kawahara (Watanabe Ikkei), who is hated, albeit politely, by his son Junpei (Nakamura Tomoya); the debt-ridden Yokoyama (Nukumizu Yoichi) who has a curious love/hate relationship with her brooding son, Kazuki (Hatano Shuto); down-on-his-luck businessman Yanagioka (Yamazaki Hajime), who’s looking to get rid of one of his eight kids, especially the annoying Saburo (Tojima Shunki); middle-aged single mother Kimiyo (Takahashi Hitomi) who, after finding a toyboy (Yamada Yoshitatsu) for herself, believes she has no room for her daughter Harumi (Kawahara Makoto); the cloyingly sweet couple Nishiyama (Hozumi Pepe) and Michiyo (Mizuki Kaoru) who are so wrapped up in each other that they couldn’t be bothered with daughter Shoko (Yagyu Miyu) and her problems; and the hyper-religious Maeda (Arizono Yoshiki), whose strange idea of baptism seems more like drowning when it comes to his poor son, Shoichi (Ishihara Keito)! Clearly, there’s something wrong with these people!
But it gets even worse! After all the initial camping fun, it isn’t long before an enigmatic camp counselor named Kakiuchi (writer/director Dankan) summons the parents together to reveal the camp’s terrible secret! It seems that the parents have decided to sell their kids to a powerful, but mysterious syndicate with the only condition being that the parents have to participate in the camping trip with the very children they despise. In an even sicker twist, Kakiuchi is quick to remind the parents that if there are fewer children alive at the end of the vacation, then that would guarantee even more money for the parents of the survivors! Not long after the meeting, things go from bad to worse for the children – one gets sick after someone slips a Mickey into his a drink, while another almost takes a dive from a cliff when the rope is mysteriously cut! And then there’s the thief who shows up at the camp and takes one young boy hostage! To top it all off, it seems that Kakiuchi is playing a dangerous game of his own, one that will have dramatic consequences for everyone involved! No one at the camp will be prepared for the shocking, final surprise of Shinchinin no Tomurai!
