As soon as Tony Leung, hair shiny with brill-cream, starts imitating the stilted dialogue of sixties heartthrob Lui Kei, film lovers know they've entered a charmed circle of movie-in-jokes and self-conscious world. Bobo Fung parodies herself as a female Robin Hood who are still living in the golden a-go-go era. This has taken all the references from the Golden Age of Cantonese cinema and becomes a combination of different genres of Hong Kong movies with a series of period pop songs. The movie becomes an overnight classic cult comedy and one of Lau's masterpieces.

Comedy of the absurd
|
An unsuccessful writer involves herself, a scatty friend (the funny Teresa Mo,) and a smarmy cop, with treacherous gangsters and the semi-retired reclusive caped crusaders of a previous generation. Screwball comedy with many references to old Cantonese film and opera. If one's familiar with the original source material then this film is amusing on one level. If one isn't (like me) it still works as an example of HK film-making, and the bits of Cantonese opera and retro-film come over as wonderful touches of madness. There's also in this richness a borrowing from "Delicatessen" (the bed spring scene.) |

Legendarily funny film
| "The Legendary La Rose Noire" is a very funny movie; I would have found it to be even funnier if I was familiar with all of its film references. For me, the movie became better and better as it progressed. In the early scenes, I was put off by some of the exaggerated comic acting. However, I was completely won over by a sequence in which Tony Leung Ka Fei has cement in his hair. The cast throws caution to the wind and goes all out for laughs, as the goofy story gets wilder by the minute. I even enjoyed the film's songs, although they lacked English subtitles. The key to this film's success is its ceaseless high energy and breakneck speed; director Jeffrey Lau keeps the jokes and the action flying. It helps that the film looks great on this DVD. I recommend that you watch this movie together with "Rose, Rose, I Love You" for a side-splitting Tony Leung double feature. |

This is really funny!
| If you want to see a great comedy movie, this one is one of the best I've seen so far. Me and my wife love to watch this movie, it's soooo funny and we've watched many times over the years and still laugh hard every time. The cast are great, the music (singings) are funny. Buy it and watch it and you'll see why. |

Hilarious
| Ha ha ha....Tony Leung is funny. Didn't realise he is THAT versatile. However, I still think the best portrayal of Lui Kei is Gallen Lo. Nevertheless, Tony is great in this one. Again, Maggie Siu doesn't disappoint. I hope she gets many roles, she is such a talented actress. The rest of the supporting cast were great too. Highly recommended for a window of entertainment. |

Hilarious!!!
| I saw this movie years ago, and although at the time I was not familiar with the older movie and characters that they were trying to spoof, I nonetheless found this movie to be totally hilarious. Tony Leung does a dead pan impersonation of a movie actor back in the 40's and 50's, the supporting cast does a wonderful job in creating this very lovable comedy. I suffered from serious facial contortions the first time I watched this film because I was just laughing so hard unstoppably the whole time ;) |
