YesAsia Editorial Description

Ayumi kissing herself? The J-pop princess returns with a new album and a new image. The cover of her latest release shows two images of herself in a kissing position. The superstar expressed that the idea comes from her need to console herself and her wish to cure her past self.

Ayumi's fantastic new album contains 13 recently released love ballads, some of them presented as new cover versions. Also, watch out for the song Rainbow, whose lyrics were drawn from a hundred thousand submissions that were sent in response to Ayu's appeal to the public to provide her with lyrical drafts for the song.

Ayumi's A Best released in 2001 sold an incredible 4.65 million units and A Ballads is no doubt heading for the top as well!

Not too shabby Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
A collection of Ayumi Hamasaki's best ballads up to her RAINBOW album. Aside from a couple of recorded, or re-arranged tracks, this album doesnt offer a whole lot. There is, however, the fantastic reworking of Ayu's hit song 'M'. It was taken from pop-rock wondernut to fantastic pop ballad at the hands of HAL.
Easily, this is HAL's best contribution to Ayu's body of work. It's just wonderful.
This album also offers a rare cover by Ayu in the final track ' Sotsugyou Shashin'.
Actually, the album is not a bad listen by any means, its just a little bit redundant to serious fans of her work.

Zoning Out Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
'A BALLADS' contains new mixes of old favorites and two exclusive tracks ('RAINBOW' and 'Sotsugyou Shashin'). I have a deep love for this album because I think she truly shines through her beautiful ballads. I don't have a specifically favorite song on this album because I love them all! But...if I really have to pick, I'd say that 'Voyage' is my favorite. Don't be fazed by the cover - it's just herself! It's also a good CD to zone out to. ^^

Simply Great Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10

A Ballads is so good. The new versions is amazing and the feeling in each song is just great. The whole Rainbow track is but I have not been an fan of that song. The photos of Ayu is beautiful and the new version of A Song For is even better then the original. This is not an best of album so buy it now. Ayu is still the best female singer in the world. She has the voice, the looks and the charm to make 7 more albums.

Beautiful Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This was my first Ayumi Hamasaki CD, I knew she was popular, but I didn´t know what to start with. I´m glad I started with this, because I love this CD!
Ayumis voice is very beautiful, and she is a great singer. Of all the songs on this CD, there was just one that I didn´t like 100%, the rest are all my favorites. “Rainbow” is my favorite; I think it was also only released on this CD. One word to describe this song is “magical”, I don´t understand a word of the Japanese, but the music, melody and song are in perfect harmony. “Voyage” is my second favorite, it starts out with a music box playing the chorus melody (I love music boxes!), and this song also has an orchestra playing. The melody is just as beautiful as the music, and I truly feel like I´m standing in a fantasy paradise. No matter if it´s dark or raining outside, this song brings sunshine to my life. “Dolls”, “Seasons” and “Dearest” are also songs that I play a lot. This is one of the few CDs I put on and can play all day; usually I skip some tracks because they bore me. But here, everything is beautiful. This is one of my favorite CDs.

Could have been better Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
It's A BALLADS, so it should have more concrete, solid, ballad song. The 'Who...' new mix is good, along with RAINBOW, but nothing extremely fascinating. But this is a good selection of Ayu songs, but definitely not all ballads. There are different versions of the booklet cover...so I guess that's a grabber..buy this if you're a die-hard Ayu-fan like me
