I am impressed-- this movie REALLY surpassed my expectations after the first opening sequence! I recognized Jiang Wu from his role in Xizao (Shower), and he is wonderful as Zhang Baogen as well. The people in the movies are so real that the audience can truly grasp each character as if they were simply someone from the streets of China. The story seems simple, but carries a undertone that echoes deeply in each of us-- it points at the urbanization of China, particularly the city of Shanghai, which has undergone many difficult transitions into modernization. What might appeal to others less interested in China's cities is the simple and innocent love story that the movie pretends to be, and acheives with its final scenes.
