A genre filmmaker excelled in samurai films, Gosha Hideo began his career in producing and directing action dramas and series in television in the sixties. BANDITS VS SAMURAI SQUADRON, made in the middle period of his career, is one of his most ambitious films. Spanning over ten years and with a complicated plot involving more than a dozen speaking parts, weaving a web of passionate love and spiteful vengeance, the film manages to be both highly entertaining and stylized. The story involves with a former samurai warrior who abandons his class to become the leader of a gang of bandits. He leads his outlaws in an attempt to rob the castle of his former clan to revenge for the destruction of his own family by the official whom they served.

Epic tale of cops and robbers

Are you familiar with those Russian nesting dolls? You open up one and find that there is another doll nested inside it. You open up that smaller doll and there is another one inside it, etc. The film "Bandits vs. Samurai Squadron" is constructed in a similar fashion. Just when you think the plot has played out and the movie is about to end, you find that there is another plot inside the plot and the film rolls on. Rolls on for over 160 action-packed minutes. This is a very complex film. It took me most of the first hour to figure out who is who among the vast cast of characters. Then I found that many of the characters are playing a double-game and the story became more complex. Boiled down to its essentials, the story is about a war between two rival criminal gangs and the attempts of a noble police officer to bring both gangs to justice. The film primarily revolves around the gang leader played by Nakadai Tatsuya, whose peculiar acting style perfectly suits the mysterious mob boss he plays here. Director Hideo Gosha fills the screen with a steady gaudy tale of scheming, action, sex, and honor. While the film sometimes verges on the lurid, Gosha has much bigger fish to fry. In the end, "Bandits vs. Samurai Squad" is akin to a Japanese version of "'The Godfather' Meets 'The Untouchables'". I recommend it highly for a mature audience. |
