導演:黑澤明
Director: Akira Kurosawa
做虛作假,不擇手段!
窮追猛打,炒作煽情!
一場為正義而戰的硬仗;
A young painter and a popular singer meet very politely by chance at a resort hotel, and scandal-mongering journalists blow it up into a secret romance. The two decide to fight the press in court, and an impoverished old lawyer takes it upon himself to help. The win their case when the old lawyer finally admits the editor bribed him to lose. Criticizing irresponsible, sensationalistic journalism, Kurosawa's film is, at one level, a soap opera from which every last tear is shamelessly wrung by his established cast. Look closely, however, and you'll detect a caustic parody of the genre it appears to ape and a satire on the Japanese willingness to accept the alien culture thrust upon them by America.

Kurosawa made this?!?
|
The year 1954 saw director Kurosawa Akira create two timeless classics, "Rashomon" and "Seven Samurai". Wedged in between those great films, Kurosawa also found time to direct "Scandal". Watching this strange little melodrama is a disturbing experience, like discovering that Leo Tolstoy paid the bills by writing cheesy romance novels in between producing "Anna Karenina" and "War and Peace". Of course, Tolstoy did no such thing, but the undeniably great Kurosawa really did helm this trifle. The film starts with a timely premise: Paparazzi take a photo of a famous singer and a well-known artist together at a resort. A gossip magazine then turns the photo into an entirely fictitious story of a romantic tryst. When the artist complains, the magazine publisher refuses to apologize. The artist decides to take the publisher to court. So far, so good. The film goes off the rails when the artist hires a dissolute shyster to handle his case. The disreputable lawyer just happens to have an adorable, but terminally ill, daughter; the film plays up this side story for all the bathos that can be soaked from it. The lawyer then is bribed by the publisher to lose the case intentionally. The film ends with a ludicrous courtroom scene. Will the artist win his case or will the publisher get away with his libel? One thing you can count on -- it will be a very sappy ending. "Scandal" is an interesting curiousity for serious fans of Kurosawa, but be aware that, as presented on this DVD, the English subtitles are lousy and the second half of the film suffers from dreadfully bad sound synchronization. The description of this film shown above on this page calls it a parody. The parodic elements entirely escaped me; perhaps they might be more apparent with better subtitles and less disruptive sound problems. |
