A poor boy becomes friends with a rich girl. He has a pigeon which he sells, but since it is a homing pigeon, he can actually sell it over and over again. The bird becomes the symbol of his friendship for the girl as well, but in the end she has her brother shoot and kill it. This directorial debut of Oshima Nagisa immediately estadlished the young filmmaker as the leader of the Japanese New Cinema in sixties. The unsentimental and harsh realistic style was vastly different from the melodramatic tardintional of Shochiku Company, the studio who financed the film, at the time. Oshima suggested that there's are no compromise between the rich and the poor and class distinction are closely linked to criminal tendencies.

Short and sweet

"Street of Love and Hope" packs an almost Dickensian story into its short 62 minute running length. At the movie's heart is an impoverished mother and her two children who live in shack in a Tokyo slum. The sickly mother works hard shining shoes to make money for her family. Her teenaged son wishes to help her out by leaving school and taking a job, but she wants him to finish his education so he may gain a better life. At his mother's urging, the boy reluctantly sells pigeons to unwitting purchasers. The pigeons always return to him because they are homing pigeons; consequently, he sells the same birds over and over again. This scheme comes back to haunt him in a surprising way. The theme of the film is about how events tend to conspire against those living in poverty to make it difficult for them to rise out of their circumstances. Along the way, we get some interesting lessons about class differences. This sincerely told tale is smoothly directed and well-acted. There are numerous problems with the English subtitles, but I was able to follow the story easily. I can recommend this affecting film for a general audience. |
