Director: Nomura Yoshitaro

Two detectives are assigned to investigate the murder of a 60-year-old policeman at the Tokyo Railway Station. The victim is well-liked and benevolent and there does not seem to be any motivation to the murder. A further investigation finally leads to the discovery of the hidden past of a young rising composer.

The original novel by Matsumoto Seicho on which the film is based has been a bestseller in Japan. The adaptation by Yamada Yoji (of the Tora-san series fame) and director Nomura Toshitaro skillfully incorporates the elements of melodrama, suspense and thriller to form a tightly structured human drama about someone who attempts to escape from his past but fails.

Skillful tale of detection Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"The Castle of Sand" is a beautifully orchestrated story of two Tokyo police detectives doggedly following up every lead in their ceaseless efforts to solve a seemingly unsolveable murder mystery. The film was crisply written by the great Yamada Yoji and smoothly directed by Nomura Yoshitaru. It is a testimony to director Nomura's reputation that he was able to get a number of major actors to play small roles in this film.

The film runs for 2 hours and 22 minutes, but my interest never flagged as I followed the meticulous detailing of this story's complicated plot. I particularly enjoyed the panoramic view of Japanese society we get as the investigators criss-cross the country in pursuit of clues.

The story has a satisfying and logical conclusion that is presented in a masterful way here. I can recommend this film very highly for all fans of murder mysteries. By the way, the Matsumoto Seicho novel upon which this film is based is available in a good English translation from the excellent Soho Crime series under the title, "Inspector Imanishi Investigates".
