The famous story of the too honest and goodhearted prince, the perverse beauty and the gloomy merchant's son takes place in Hokkaido instead of Petersburg. The beauty toys with the affections of both men, while the prince is also attracted to an upstanding general's daughter...After his international breakthrough and success with Rashomon, Kurosawa updated Dostoyevsky's novel with this minor classic. Following closely the plot of his favorite literary work but in a slavish manner, the Japanese master managed to capture the original's greatness, filtered through his won sensibility.

A fascinating mess

Kurosawa Akira's "The Idiot" is an interesting failure. Director Kurosawa conceived and filmed the project as a two-movie, four hour and 22 minute long epic. However, the studio refused to release the film in that form. They required Kurosawa to cut 99 minutes from the project (footage that apparently has been lost) and to release the project as a single movie. The resulting two hour and forty-three minute marathon has gaping holes in its story. But that isn't its biggest flaw. The story is drawn from Fyodor Dostoevsky's classic novel of the same name. Dostoevsky's story is based upon specifically Christian themes; Kurosawa removed those themes, leaving a rather empty, overlong melodrama. The film's central character -- the "idiot" -- is a cypher; his absence of personality creates a void at the heart of the film. In addition, the acting style that Kurosawa encouraged the cast to employ is bizarrely exaggerated. Poor Mifune Toshiro's bug-eyed performance is laughable in some scenes. Only Hara Setsuko manages to fashion a believable character. On a more positive note, the film features some striking cinematography of a snowbound Hokkaido. I encourage film buffs and Kurosawa fans to watch this film; it really is an interesting example of how a great artist like Kurosawa occasionally can overreach and end up with a flop. |
