The body of Sakai Hatsuko, a woman of 23 who has been slain with a knife, is found in a forest. Some days later, Ueda Hiroshi, a 19-year-old shipyard worker, is arrested and charged with the murder. At Ueda's trial, a complex story unfolds. Directed by Nomura Yoshitaro, an expert in the suspense and mystery genre, The Incident is a study in unrestrained passion and jealousy. Normura's other films include several acclaimed collaborations with suspense novelist Matsumoto Seicho such as Zero Focus, The Shadow Within, The Castle of Sand and Suspicion.

A modern-day "Rashomon" Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"The Incident" tells of the criminal trial of a young man accused of murdering his pregnant lover's sister. It is presented in a no-nonsense, almost documentary style, with the focus on the court proceedings and the testimony presented by a series of witnesses. While this story-telling technique provides interesting insights into the workings of the Japanese criminal justice system, it distances viewers from the actual characters involved in the story.

The movie works a little bit like a modern-day "Rashomon", with the viewer's perspective on the case and sympathies for the defendant shifting as more and more testimony emerges. To its credit, the film presents people as they really are, with their complex mix of passions and prejudices. And the film's ambiguous ending leads one to question the ambiguity of guilt and innocence in cases like this one.

I had a few problems with this presentation of the film. First, this DVD presents a fullscreen, pan-and-scan version of the film that is less than optimal; a widescreen presentation would have been better. Second, some of the English subtitles are not properly synchronized with the dialogue; sometimes the subtitle appears a few beats after someone finishes saying something. This can get confusing when there is a rapid-fire conversation taking place. Third, the second half-hour of the movie has a periodic (roughly every three or four seconds) audio disturbance that caused me to turn down the sound of the movie for a while.

The director of "The Incident" has made some brilliantly atmospheric, Hitchcockian dramas. I particularly recommend his film "Zero Focus". "The Incident" is a much cruder form of film-making, but I can recommend it for its engrossing depiction of the Japanese legal system and the honest manner in which it handles its characters and story.
