The 23rd instalment in the Tora-san series. After collaborating with Yamada Yoji in "The Yellow Handkerchief", Momoi Kaori work with the director again in this film as the innocent and emotional Hitomi, who comes from a wealthy family. Tora-san meets her on his way to Hokkaido when she was having second thoughts about her wedding. Tora-san tries to help her to gather herself and prepare to get married. However, she manages to run away before the actual ceremony. She arrives at Tora-san's home in her wedding dress. Tora-san immediately agrees to hide her in the house. One day, her fiance, Kunio, comes to find her. He has left his parents and is now living alone. Hitomi is moved by his will to change and agrees to get married with him again. A happy ending for the couple, but another sad story for Tora-san.

Hilarious and heartwarming! Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
In the 23rd film in the Tora-San series, director Yamada Yoji still finds fresh and funny things to say. Indeed, "Tora-San, the Matchmaker" is a stand-out in the series with its focus on actress Momoi Kaori as Hitomi, a spoiled rich girl who balks at her arranged marriage to a pampered young man.

Tora meets Hitomi while on one of his many peddling trips. He rescues her from the advances of an incompetent (and inadvertently hilarious) sexual predator. Hitomi is fumblingly trying to find her way in life, unsure of what direction to take, but headed for an arranged marriage to the future heir of a successful interior design business (nicely played by Fuse Akira).

We next encounter Hitomi in the midst of her wedding ceremony, practically gasping for air as she feels trapped in a fate she doesn't want. After changing from her traditional wedding kimono into a modern wedding gown, she flees her wedding and makes a beeline for Toraya, where Tora is more than happy to help the young woman for whom he is developing romantic feelings.

Her jilted groom does not give up his pursuit of Hitomi. Instead, he quits his job with the family firm and takes up menial labor and living in a run-down tenement. Eventually Hitomi comes to see that there is more to this man than just the spoiled scion of a successful business and she falls in love with him. Tora is asked to become the go-between for their marriage and his subsequent wedding speech is one of the comic highlights of this great series.

I really enjoyed Momoi Kaori in this film; her acting style perfectly suits the character of Hitomi. Indeed, check out her speech at the wedding for a clinic in how a good actor can make scripted lines seem entirely spontaneous and very moving. Also excellent is veteran actress Koguri Michiyo as Hitomi's rather starchy mother.

"Tora-San, the Matchmaker" is a terrific film, filled with funny, warm, and heartfelt moments. I recommend it very, very highly.
