A cherished Tora-san film Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
"Tora-San's Cherished Mother", the second film in the incomparable Tora-San series, is brimming with brilliant story elements. It truly is not just a terrific Tora-San movie; it is a great film, period.

To my knowledge, this is the only film in the series in which we get an opportunity to meet Tora's mother. She abandoned Tora when he was an infant (and she was a down-market geisha) and he has dreamt of meeting her his whole life. Tora hears that she is a maid in a hotel in Kyoto. He goes to visit her, only to find that she is the manager of a love hotel frequented by hookers and their johns. As any fan of the series would expect, tempers flare and the meeting goes badly.

Of course, Tora falls in love with another woman with whom he has no chance. She's the daughter of his former teacher and works as a classical musician. Tora gets reacquainted with his former teacher, who is quite a character in his own right. And a doctor (played by Watanabe Ken) attending to Tora wins the heart of the teacher's daughter.

A bare-bones description of the story doesn't do this film justice. Yamada Yoji's skillful direction brings Tora's little community of friends and relatives to vibrant, hilarious, and heart-breaking life. I honestly believe that anyone who gives this film a chance will love it. Very, very highly recommended.
