The ninth instalment of the Tora-san series. On the road to Kanazawa, Tora-san meets three female tourists, one of them is the sad-looking and beautiful Utako (Sayuri Yoshinaga). Tora-san falls for her at first sight. Afterwards, she comes to Shibamata to visit Tora-san in his old home, which sends him to the sky. But it turns out that Utako comes to confide with Tora-san, for her parents forbid her to marry the man she loves... Tora-san's heart is being broken again.

Has Tora met his bride?

The ninth installment in the series, "Tora-San's Dear Old Home" is another solid Tora-San film from director Yamada Yoji. The movie has a relatively simple story. Tora returns to Shibamata from the road to find a "Room for Rent" sign posted at Toraya. Tora's aunt and uncle are seeking to rent Tora's old room for extra income to help Sakura and Hiroshi buy a house. The sign makes Tora feel unwelcome, so he leaves in a huff. Next we find him selling souvenirs in Kanazawa, where he encounters three vacationing young women. They hit it off and Tora ends up traveling with them for a while. One of the three, a sad-eyed beauty played by Yoshinaga Sayuri, later visits Tora upon his next return to Toraya and their friendship grows. Surprisingly, Sakura suggests to Tora that perhaps he might consider marrying the young woman and, of course, Tora has fallen head over heels in love with her. Will this be the one for Tora? Has he finally met his bride? Or, as usual, will Tora's dreams end in disappointment? That's what this film is all about and it is told in the engaging Yamada style. For fans of the Tora-San series, there are a couple noteworthy things about this film. First, it is the film in which Tora shouts "Buttah!" instead of "Cheese" when his picture is taken (trust me, fans will remember that scene). Second, this is the first film for the second actor to play Tora's uncle. It is a shock to see a different actor in this familiar role! I recommend this fine film for a general audience. |
