The fourth installment of the Tora-san series. Tora-san offers a free trip to Hawaii to his uncle and wife who took care of him and his sister after his father's death. But not when they arrove at the airport do they learn that the travel agent has run away with their money. Ashamed and fearing that they will be a laughing stock for their neighbours, they decided to creep into their house after dark. But a petty theif trespasses their house, thinking about that they has left for Hawaii. Though they catch the theif in the end, their secret plan is finally revealed!

More great fun with Tora-San

"Tora-San's Grand Scheme", the fourth film in the Tora-San series, is the second and final entrant in the series that was not directed by Yamada Yoji. The film starts with Tora eating a humble lunch on one of his many trips, when the elderly proprietor of the restaurant receives in the mail a footwarmer from her grandchildren. The woman's gratitude makes Tora feel that he must do something to reward the aunt and uncle who raised him. Since he has almost no money, he heads to the racetrack to try to win some. Astonishingly, he somehow manages to win a million yen. He then returns to Toraya in triumph. It is decided that he will spend his winnings on tickets for a trip to Hawaii for his aunt and uncle. As you might expect, after a series of farcical events, it ends badly, with Tora leaving in disappointment. When next he returns to Toraya, he is shocked to find that his room has been rented. As he prepares to storm off in anger, he sees the beautiful kindergarten teacher who is renting his room and (surprise, surprise) decides to stay. Will this prove to be the great love of Tora's life? If you follow this series, you know how the story will end, but you will enjoy the funny, poignant, and heartwarming ride along the way to the inevitable conclusion. "Tora-San's Grand Scheme" is an enjoyable film in this great series and is well worth owning. I recommend it for a general audience. |
