The eighth installment of the Tora-san series. Tora-san is on the road again after a short return to his home at Shibamata and a squabble with his uncle and aunt. In the course of his travel, he attends the funeral mass of her sister’s mother-in-law and is inspired by Hyoichiro, who used to devote himself to research work and has now become a lonely old man after his wife’s death. Tora-san returns home and finds himself in love with the beautiful coffee shop owner Takako. He gets along with Takako’s son and starts dreaming about having a family of three, while Sakura and all others start to worry about when he will be frustrated in love again. One day, Tora-san suddenly packs for another journey as he has decided to let go...

A Tora-San classic Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Running almost two hours in length, "Tora-San's Love Call" likely is the longest film in the great Tora-San series and certainly is among the best. Atsumi Kiyoshi gives a superb, well-rounded performance as Tora. Tora is at his best and his worst in this film.

After the death of Hiroshi's mother, Tora stays for a few days with Hiroshi's father to lift the spirits of the elderly academic. The old man tells Tora of a time when he looked in on a happy family eating dinner and thought that this was a vision of real life, of life as it should be lived. The image turns Tora's mind to marriage.

Upon his next visit to Toraya, Tora meets a young widow who owns a coffee shop in the neighborhood. As anyone familiar with this series will know, Tora swiftly falls head over heels in love with the woman. After he shows kindness to both her son and her, the woman begins to develop feelings for Tora. Will this be the one? Has Tora finally found his true love and future bride?

The answer, and this film's resolution, gives us a glimpse into the wounded and insecure soul of Tora. It is amazing how Yamada Yoji kept finding new insights and new depths in his favorite character. This is a warm-hearted wonder of a film and I recommend it very, very highly. For viewers who are new to the series, don't feel that you need to watch all of the preceding films in the series to appreciate this one. Check this one out! You'll love it.
