The thirteenth instalment in the Tora-san series. Tora-san is getting married! Oh no, it was a mistake. Tora-san thought that single parent Okinu will marry him. However, the father of her son comes back to reunite with his family all of a sudden, which leaves the lonely Tora-san to another heartbreak again... On his way, he meets Utako again. Two years ago, Utako married a young artist and moved to Tsuwano. Now, her husband died and she stays at his home. Utako wants to come back to Tokyo to find a job, but she was afraid that her father would oppose to the idea, until Tora-san appears and changed her mind. This is the second time Misaka Chieko starred in the Tora-san series after Tora-san's Dear Old Home.

Tora falls in love ... twice!

Poor Tora-San! In "Tora-San's Lovesick", he is disappointed in love not just once, but twice. The film opens with Tora excitedly returning home from the road with an "important announcement". Everyone assumes that he will be announcing his engagement. The family gets excited and prepares a big celebration. However, as it turns out, there is no engagement. Indeed, while Tora once again is intoxicated with love, his relationship with the woman (who apparently has been abandoned by her husband) has been minimal. Tempers flare over the misunderstanding. Sakura and the Octopus agree to join Tora on a trip to meet the woman, but, upon their arrival, they find that the woman's husband has returned. Tora is crushed. Tora next runs into Utako (Yoshinaga Sayuri), the lovely young woman with whom he fell in love in "Tora-San's Dear Old Home". Tora learns that Utako's husband has died and that she unhappily resides with her husband's family. At Tora's urging, she soon comes to Tokyo and moves into Toraya. Tora is head over heels in love once again. There are some great scenes with Miyaguchi Seiji, the superb actor who plays Utako's father. He is a famous writer, with a crusty, curmudgeonly, introverted personality, yet he also dearly loves his daughter. Watching his interactions with Tora, Sakura, and Utako is priceless. The film has a lovely scene between Tora and Utako, with fireworks exploding in the background, in which Tora learns of the fate of their relationship. There also are several gorgeous scenes of the small, remote resort communities that director Yamada Yoji seems to love. This thirteenth installment in the Tora-San series is up to the high standards we expect from Yamada and I recommend it highly. |
