Yamada Yoji returns!
|
AFter skipping the third and fourth installments in the Tora-San series, Director Yamada Yoji returned to the helm with "Tora-San's Runaway" and the series returned to top-notch form. Back again are the fantasy sequence to start the movie (this time Tora dreams that his uncle is seriously ill) and back again is a much larger role for Tora-San's sister, played by the lovely Baisho Chieko. Director Yamada clearly understood what the directors of the third and fourth installments did not, i.e., Baisho Chieko's character was the warm, beating heart at the center of this great film series. After dreaming of his uncle's illness, Tora called back to Toraya to see how everyone was doing. His aunt joked to him that his uncle actually was seriously ill, but Tora didn't understand the joke so he raced home only to discover his uncle is fine. While at Toraya, Tora receives a message that an old friend (and a relative of his pal, Noburo) was near death and wanted to see him. Noburo and Tora travel to Sapporo to be with him. The old friend's dying wish is to see his son. Tora and Noburo track the son down and plead with him to visit his dying father, but the son refuses. A crestfallen Tora then urges Noburo to visit his aged father, who he hasn't seen in years. Noburo refuses, Tora and Noburo have a falling out, and Tora returns to his old neighborhood determined to set a new, serious course for his life. Tora takes a job in a small shop making and selling fried tofu. Tora's family is very impressed with Tora's newfound diligence, until they learn that the shopowner has a beautiful daughter with whom Tora has fallen hopelessly in love. Those familiar with the series can guess how this situation will turn out. "Tora-San's Runaway" is a bit darker in its theme than most of the Tora-San films, but it is no less entertaining. My one big problem with this version of the film is that the English subtitles are terrible. Certain mistakes are obvious, like when Tora's aunt says "Toraya", referring to the shop, but the subtitles read "Tora". Other problems are worse, as when entire paragraphs of dialogue are reduced to a single short sentence in the subtitles. I think these are the worst subtitles in this entire series. Nonetheless, the viewer is able to follow the story. And for its interesting, if dark, story and the usual fine performances by the familiar ensemble, I can recommend "Tora-San's Runaway" highly. |
