Gosha Hideo spent five years to work out the plot of this film, which profoundly describes one’s uncontrollable desires, brutish nature, restlessness with anxiety and the eagerness to break through. Sakane-Fujiyoshi, a mineworker, receives a huge sum of compensation after an accident. This changes abruptly – he starts an affair with his friend’s wife and them murders his own wife and son. When his desire for his friend’s daughter is not to be satisfied, he blows up their house. After an attempt to suicide, he manages to escape from prison and becomes a fugitive. When this cold-blooded murderer met Chie, a gentle woman who falls deeply in love with him, his life comes to a turning point ….

A killer on the lam

"Tracked" is a powerful tale of unleashed evil. Based on a true story, the film bears some striking similarities to "Vengeance is Mine", also starring Ogata Ken. Indeed, I strongly recommend that viewers see both films. Director Gosha Hideo fractured the story into fragments and presents the fragments in non-chronological order. Thus, following the story requires paying close attention. Ogata Ken plays a brutish mine worker gone horribly wrong when his covetous nature gets out of control. He is jailed after killing four people, including his wife and son, but, after his attempted suicide is foiled, he manages to break out of prison in spectacular fashion. He then spends his life on the lam, working at one mine after another, always one step ahead of the police. Eventually, he seems to find peace in the arms of a woman who owns a small restaurant. Will he be able to settle down with this woman or will his past catch up with him? "Tracked" is a gripping film that will keep you engrossed throughout its 125 minute running time. I recommend it very highly for a mature audience. |
