Ichikawa Jun's unique vision
|
This is the third movie I've seen that was directed by Ichikawa Jun; he quickly is becoming one of my favorite directors. His films are not like anyone else's. They unfold slowly, in an oblique fashion. They are peopled with quirky characters. They shun traditional plot structures. Yet I find them totally engrossing. "Tsugumi" tells of a young woman (named Tsugumi) whose lifelong illness has shaped her personality. She has become withdrawn and strange, selfish and mean-spirited, yet capable of tenderness and love. She always has known that she will not have a long life. The local boys find her remoteness attractive. She dates them, then dumps them, but falls for an outsider who has come to her town to work in a museum. The local boys respond to this relationship in anger. What will be the outcome? Is Tsugumi's love doomed? "Tsugumi" makes a good bookend with Director Ichikawa's film "Tony Takitani". While "Tsugumi" essentially is a meditation on impending death, "Tony Takitani" takes the loss of a loved one as its theme. "Tsugumi" is beautifully filmed; this, unfortunately, is a rather dark transfer of the film. Still, it is lovely to look at and fascinating to contemplate. As with his other films, Director Ichikawa's vision enlarges ours. Your humble servant recommends this film very highly. |
