The heir to a family fortune discovers that a curse has been placed on it, put there centuries before by a band of samurai warriors. Directed by Nomura Yoshitaro, this suspense movie was an immense hit when it was first released. With a budget of over 700 million Yen, the film grossed more than 2.5 million Yen in Japan alone. Adapted from the novel of the same name by suspense master Yokomizo Seishi and scripted by Hashimoto Shinobu, the writer of such Kurosawa classics as Rashomon and Seven Samurai, it was remade by Ichikawa Kon in the nineties, ableit in a much inferior version.

Tale of horror and suspense
|
"Village of Eight Gravestones" is a terrific suspense thriller, featuring a gripping story, a superb cast, beautiful soundtrack music, and gorgeous cinematography. After his maternal grandfather dies before his eyes, Tatsuya accompanies the body to his mother's village for burial. Upon arriving, Tatsuya learns that he is about to become heir to a family fortune. However, something is not quite right in the village, known as "The Village of Eight Gravestones". It seems that the village has been accursed for centuries due to the betrayal of some 16th century warriors who were slaughtered by the villagers in exchange for a reward. Now it appears that the curse has returned. Bodies begin to pile up quickly and the villagers respond by blaming Tatsuya for bringing this curse back upon them. Tatsuya is consoled by the attentions of a lovely widow, nicely played by Mayumi Ogawa. Before this film is over, the viewer suspects an assortment of different colorful characters as being the killer. The film's director does a masterful job of building and sustaining the suspense. Atsumi Kiyoshi, taking a break from his familiar Tora-San role, effectively plays against type as a scholarly investigator seeking to find the perpetrator. The film's running length of 151 minutes never seems overlong; indeed, the story flies by as the viewer is caught up in the drama. "The Village of Eight Gravestones" is very highly recommended. |
