Following the critical and commercial success of the Ip Man series, acclaimed director Wilson Yip seeks to update the 80s fantasy classic A Chinese Ghost Story in his unique vision. Rather than a straight-laced remake, Yip's big-budget modern retelling is an audacious reinterpretation of the supernatural story from Liaozhai the beloved original by Tsui Hark and Ching Siu Tung is based on. The major difference involves shifting the focus to demon hunter Yan Chixia (Louis Koo), who even gets entangled in a human-demon romantic triangle with Nie Xiaoqian (Liu Yifei, The Forbidden Kingdom) and Ning Caichen (Yu Shaoqun, Shaolin). Kara Hui and Fan Siu Wong lend their kung fu star credentials to the 2011 production, which combines impressive action scenes (choreographed by veteran Ma Yuk Sing) and top-notch visual effects created by Korean CG experts to exhilarating results.

Aspiring to be the top demon hunter, Yan Chixia (Louis Koo) ventures into the sinister Black Mountain, taking it as his training ground. There, he has slain all kinds of evil spirits and monsters in countless dangerous battles, but when the young exorcist encounters the enchanting fox spirit Nie Xiaoqian (Liu Yifei) and falls helplessly in love with her, he can't get himself to kill her. Years later, the village at the bottom of Black Mountain is faced with a serious drought, and the villagers are forced to find a new source of water on the demon-infested mountain. Part of the search team, a good-natured scholar named Ning Caichen (Yu Shaoqun) meets Xiaoqian and is smitten with her, who is being enslaved by the powerful and bloodthirsty Tree Demon (Kara Hui)...
