YesAsia Editorial Description

Producer Tsui Hark and director Ching Siu Tung join forces for A Chinese Ghost Story, a wildly entertaining supernatural action-comedy-romance-horror-swordplay film that's as classic as Hong Kong Cinema gets! Ning (Leslie Cheung) is a mousy tax collector who spends a night in a supposedly haunted villa. Instead of obviously grotesque creatures, Ning meets an enchanting maiden named Sian (the ethereal Joey Wang). But Sian is a ghost bound to the netherworld, and worse, her master is a soul-sucking tree demon with an extremely long tongue! Ning is slated to become the demon's next meal, but some humanity remaining in Sian compels her to keep him alive. Romance blossoms, and Ning resolves to help Sian. He even enlists the aid of a drunken Taoist ghostbuster (Wu Ma) to save Sian and rout the evil demon. But even if the duo succeeds, everlasting love may be only a fantasy...

A winning combination of dizzying camerawork, gorgeous cinematography, beautiful sets and costumes, energetic action, and clever comedy has made A Chinese Ghost Story a worldwide audience favorite, and easily one of the most essential Hong Kong movies around. Ching Siu Tung finds the right balance of disparate elements to please both thrill-seekers and cinema lovers, and the result is a truly enjoyable motion picture with literally something for everyone! Followed by equally enjoyable sequels, A Chinese Ghost Story 2 and A Chinese Ghost Story 3.

A GHOSTLY DELIGHT Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is a classic of 1980s hong kong cinema and is a must purchase movie. The blu ray as usual for a kam and ronson release is well below the standard expected of blu ray even for an older movie. Maybe if they put these old movies on bd50 discs instead of bd25 discs they may look a bit better encoded at a higher bit rate. Frankly the transfer looks like an upscaled version of the previous release, complete with the same print damage and poorly worded english subtitles. The audio is ok and at least is in 7.1 surround. It does not sound as shrill sounding as the previous dvd.

best chinese ghost story movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is a very wonderful & cool movie. This movie may be the best Chinese movie that I have seen so far. The music & the songs, they really express feeling about the movie. Leslie Chueng & Joey Wong, they both have done a very excellent job, being the two main characters in this movie. And we will always keep Leslie Chueng in memory as a excellent actor.

No wonder this is considered a cult movie. Leslie Cheung is absolutely amazing in his interpretation of the funny/sexy guy (ok, TERRIBLY sexy... sigh). This movie is cool, even if you don't like comedy just buy it to see him acting...

Great Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This film was one of the first HK films I watched that wasnt martial arts. Its great, it has action, love, honour, bravery and justice. The effects may be a little rusty compared to what HK are producing now but i think this film has a great storyline and great potential. It may not be for all though, its more of an acquired taste.
