A Chinese Ghost Story Trilogy DTS Boxset (Korean Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

A Chinese Ghost Story offers chills + giggles!

The Chinese Ghost Story trilogy has pioneered a new genre in Hong Kong cinema combining horror, romance action and costume. The trilogy that was brough to life by Ching Siu Tung and Tsui Hark, is loosely adapted from the classic Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio written by Pu Song Ling in the Qing Dynasty. For the big screen version the traditional ghost story was brilliantly transformed into fascinating visuals with new artistic directions and modern special effects.

Her portrayal of a charming female ghost won Joey Wang the reputation as "classical beauty". No less enchanting is late super idol Leslie Cheung who prior to this blockbuster never wore ancient Chinese costumes for a movie role. The tale revolves around tax-collector Ning Tsai Shen (Leslie Cheung) who trespasses a temple for a night but is awakened by the bewitching music played by the feminine and attractive Hsiao Tsing (Joey Wang). He is madly in love with her and doesn't notice that resident Taoist Monk Yin (Wo Ma) has repeatedly stopped her from murdering him...

With an ancient romance reenacted by the charismatic Leslie and Joey, and spectacular action performed by veteran actor Wo Ma, A Chinese Ghost Story became a box-office hit all over Asia soon after its release and is considered a classic nowadays.

Its sequel A Chinese Ghost Story 2 is just as acclaimed. Though this is an even looser adaptation of the Qing Dynasty text, the spookiness in Pu Song Ling's story is well preserved. Leslie Cheung, with his unparalleled charisma, continues to star as Ning Tsai Shen but Joey Wang becomes another female "ghost" named Windy. The cast is even stronger with the gorgeous Michelle Reis and top singer Jacky Cheung joining this second episode. The next year in 1991, Ching Siu Tung and Tsui Hark directed the third episode. Instead of Leslie Cheung, A Chinese Ghost Story 3 stars Tony Leung Chiu Wai who is no less captivating. Another uncanny romance between Tony Leung and Joey Wang begins to unfold...

The three films have been nominated and won numerous awards, especially in original scores, artistic direction and action choreography. A Chinese Ghost Story was awarded Best Art Direction, Best Original Film Score and Best Original Film Song at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 1987.

Now you can own all three films at once in the best quality ever! Digitally re-mastered with Dolby Digital 6.1 sound mix, the three Chinese Ghost Stories now come nicely in a box-set together with a 36-page full color booklet which contains the synopsis, still pictures and behind-the-scene photos. Interviews with the famous action choreographer Yuen Bun and the late lyricist and composer James Wong who penned the songs for the films are also included. Immerse yourself into the eerie but romantic world of the Chinese Ghost Stories today!

The Boxset has Leslie Cheung as Ning Tsai Shen Joey Wang as Hsiao Tsing on the front cover, while the back cover features Tony Leung and Joey Wang in A Chinese Ghost Story 3.

Zone Free Releases please! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
It is great to read the reviews but unless there are issues for Zones A,B,C (i.e. Zone Free) in which e.g. most 'older' titles in the USA and Britain are released , we won't be throwing our old DVD's away! Cheers!

What a Treasure Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Most people probably already know what this trilogy is about, so I'm not going to give a review of the movies. Instead, I'll give a brief review of the technical aspects of this DVD boxset. This boxset is a real treasure if you're a fan of "A Chinese ghost story". The picture quality is significantly improved over the "Megastar DVD versions" which were released more than 10 years ago. I have a big screen tv, and believe me, the picture is crystal clear, almost as if these DVDs were officially produced by large Hollywood Studios like Sony, Warner Bros., Paramount, etc. The sound quality is also greatly improved. You WILL notice all of these improvements when you play them. I was hesitant at first to get this boxset since I already owned the MegaStar versions on DVD and also because of the fact that the MegaStar versions had poor picture and audio quality when viewed on large screen TVs. These three great wonderful films have finally been given the treatment that they deserved. The improvements are so astonishing that one can only wonder why these films weren't given a theatrical release in North America.

Beautiful Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
I absolutely love this remastered series. Even the change of colours is for the better. For instance, the love scene in Part I originally was in full colour, but I feel that shading the scene in blue gives it a more mystical, exotic, and sensual feel.

The music and sound is also much better than the previous versions. I love the lyrics of the love scene in Part I. The music during Joey Wong's bath scene is also appropriately (and sensually) placed.

I only wished that the DVDs could have been packed with more extras.

Impressive remastered Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Wow, this collection is quite awesome. It even came with a booklet featuring all 3 A Chinese Ghost Story characters and behind the scene. But it would be better if the pages were much more thicker. But still the DVD's were a bestmanics. They have done such a great job on refixing the graphic and sounds. I was impressed by the way it has change from being old to new. The big changes has made it looked like the movie has just came out and is about to be playing in the theaters. Even though I have already gotten the old version series of A Chinese Ghost Story, these new remastered versions are much much more better. Except for sometimes some scenes are in different colors, instead of the fires being red it was green/blue. But anyway these may be the last versions of A Chinese Ghost Story, and I hope that it is. Which makes These a great collection of A Chinese Ghost Story collection.

A Chinese Ghost Story remastered version Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I own this trilogy available on Laserdiscs and Megastar dvd because I’m a Joey Wong fan. Fortune Star offers us today a better transfer compared to the previous releases. Luckily for me, DTS-ES sound is clear and they did a good job here. The orignal format 2.35 is curiously presented in 1.85 widescreen enhanced for 16 :9 in using a big zoom, color is nice, but the pixels proved to be visible even the average bitrate came up to 8.6Mbps, many scenes are misty or grainy (A Chinese Ghost Story 1 and 3), sometimes the data compression of Chinese Ghost Story 3 shows up, only the second one has an excellent transfer. After all, these three movies are very impressive !
