YesAsia Editorial Description

A handful of Hong Kong filmmakers explore their feelings on the ten years since 1997 in A Decade of Love, an omnibus film premiering at the 2008 Hong Kong Summer International Film Festival. A Decade of Love crosses multiple genres for its nine segments, from comedy to drama to satire to fantasy, with each director utilizing different actors, among them Liu Kai Chi, Tse Kwan Ho, Crystal Tin, Wong Yau Nam, Josie Ho, Cheung Tat Ming, Deep Ng, Mandy Chiang and Race Wong. Each segment runs roughly ten minutes, and each uses that time to share something unique, personal and precious about post-Handover Hong Kong life.

A Decade of Love segment titles and synopses:

  • "Old Peak Road", directed by Aubrey Lam (Twelve Nights). An estranged married couple (Tse Kwan Ho and Crystal Tin) reflect on the past decade while negotiating the sale of their flat on Old Peak Road.
  • "Red Egg on the Road", directed by Chan Wing Chiu (A Side, B Side, Seaside). Ah Wong (Glen Chin) attempts to navigate an unfamiliar Wanchai in search of an old friend, and is helped by a kindly taxi driver (Tony Ho).
  • "A Dream of Hope", directed by Marco Mak (The Colour of the Truth). A mother (Louise Lee) must decide whether or not euthanize her son (Deep Ng), who has been comatose for ten years, but still dreams while in his unending sleep.
  • "Qing Fang", directed by Wong Ching Po (Jiang Hu). A forgetful man (Jones Xu) recalls an idyllic summer on Lamma Island, where he met the lovely and unforgettable Qing Fang (Race Wong).
  • "Rock Lion Rock", directed by Lam Wah Cheun (The Runaway Pistol). Ai (Angel Ho) is agoraphobic, but breaks her seclusion to help the human form of Kowloon's Lion Rock (Wong Yau Nam) cross the harbor to visit The Peak (Belinda Hamnett).
  • "Far Away Eyes", directed by Chang Wai Hung (Among the Stars). Fung (Mandy Chiang), disoriented after her mother's death, quits her job and finds momentary solace in a confession of love from a complete stranger (Cheung Tat Kwong).
  • "Paper Papa", directed by Toe Yuen (My Life as McDull). A poor little girl and her classmate use their boundless imagination to construct a cardboard spaceship, and somehow manage to save the girl's father from alcoholism.
  • "The Last Bid", directed by Takkie Yeung (The Pale Sky). A successful Hong Kong woman (Amanda S.) finds herself in a bidding war with a colleague (Ana R.) over the affections of a wayward ex-boyfriend (Carl Ng).
  • "Open Rice", directed by Lee Kung-Lok (My Mother is a Belly Dancer) and Szeto Kam Yuen. A satirical look at a typical Hong Kong family. Second son Ah Ho (Stephen Au) suspects his family (Richard Ng, Liu Kai Chi, Steven Cheung, Josie Ho) of cheating him out of a future, only to discover that perhaps they loved him all along.

9 surreal stories of HK love Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
If you'd be expecting more romantic flavoured relationships akin to crush romances, this collection of love in HK is a very much different sort. Each of the nine vignettes are quite arty in style; surreal, dreamlike, fantasy, nostaglic and reflect themes of childhood hope, family love, social breakup issues and sweet jealousy. The touching bond ship stories of social life and problems (and crucial love of course) in modern HK also have some subtle humour. Like the little girl in “Paper Papa” who dreams of launching her ‘spaceship’ to ‘cure’ and ‘blast’ away her daddies horrible alcoholism ‘monster’ (with bits of childlike vivid imagination animation). A story of reconciliation in “Red Egg on the Road” where a tourist seeks the help of a taxi driver (Tony Ho) to find an old friend he hasn’t seen for 40 years and the touching and sweet “Far Away Eyes” about a young man from afar who helps (really pretty) Fung (Mandy Chiang) get over the death of her mother and loneliness. Other interesting stories are “A Dream of Hope” about a boy in a coma for 10 years whofalls in love with a girl within his coma state, but his mother suffers indecision whether to keep her son alive or not (very ironic ending here, too). “Rock Lion Rock”, is an unusual allegory about a girl named Ai (Angel Ho) who is a recluse who never leaves her bedroom until she meets a human-lion (whose done everything - even wearing all of Ai’s t-shirt designs) who wants Ai to visit The Peak with him. But I pretty well liked all of the weird stories here.

So, some short stories that can be odd at times, but all very endearing and interestingly filmed and portrayed with a core message of love and hope. There are ironies about modern life, like the short story “The Last Bid” where two modern rich girls, who have incessant rivalry addictions to bidding for the same materialistic modern art pieces (which look like Christ crucified in black wood), and also by loving the same guy wish to bid in rivalry also to ‘win’ his heart with money. So power, love, money and materialism is the additional theme. But all finishes off with the final story “Open Rice” about family importance and necessity (although a little tongue in cheek when you regard Steven Cheung here). So, if you would like a bit of endearing weirdness and delight – you could try this little collection of 9 strange expressions of love. Recommended (especially for me as I love to see Mandy Chiang in something new).
