Engrossing historical drama Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
What drew the most attention to "Frozen Flower" proves to be the film's only real weakness. The kingdom of Goreo is a vassal state of the Yuan empire, a relationship sealed with the Goryeo king's marriage to a daughter of the Yuan royal family. However, it is a marriage in name only, as the king (Ju Jin Mo) not only is impotent, but he is attracted only to men. Unable to produce an heir, the king now faces the prospect of having the Yuan empire depose him and replace him with the king's Yuan brother-in-law. In order to avoid this fate, the king asks Hong Lim (Jo In Sung), his confidant, bodyguard, and his lover, to father a child with the queen (Song Ji Hyo). Unfortunately, the physical intimacy between the queen and the bodyguard soon leads to emotional intimacy ... and Hong Lim's loyalties soon become torn between his loyalty to the queen and his love for the queen.

"Frozen Flower" skillfully interweaves the political and personal dimensions of its tale, making the film's long 142-minute running length fly by. Indeed, the only scenes which stall the film's momentum are its controversial sex scenes, which are too frequent, too long, and much too explicit. Notwithstanding those scenes, there is no disputing the exceptional performances from the three leads and gripping nature of its fascinating story. The film also looks spectacular, with gorgeous costuming and lavish set decoration. Highly recommended, but only for a mature audience.

Too intense for me Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I bought this movie back in 08-12-09 because I really like Jo In Sung and I knew it was a famous film.
But, I just could not make myself watch this film for about one year. Finally, I made myself watch it 2 days ago. I finished it in
one afternoon because I want to know how the story went.

It was way too intense for me and I found it disturbing. For some parts, it felt like a Shakespearn masterpeice
but at the same time, I found it hard to beleive the intense love between the captain and the queen after knowing each other
for such a short time.

I also have the movie, The King and the clown. It is also not something that I want to see over again and again, either .

However, when I compared the two movies, I would say I like the :King and the Clown" better because it is a bit move
believable. I like the subtle love between the two main charcters and it also had some fun moments. Lee was excellent
as a man who looked like a woman and could act like a woman.

If I had to use two words to describe the two movies, I would say "sad' for the King and the Clown and "disturbing"
for "frozen flower". That is why I could not watch these two movies again and again.

definitely a must Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
As captivating and most enjoyable as 'the king and the crown' but more serious and not at all suitable for children. All the three main casts did remarkably well. A film that captures your attention from start to finish without a moment of wondering off. Even the subtitles are big and easy to read. Well done.

Love knows no gender Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Most of my indelible memories of Korean movies came from "Wang-ui Namja". Since then there have been many movies hoping to ride on the issue of homosexuality but many are mere hype and no punch.

I have been putting Sseonghwajeom for a while because I did not want to be disappointed but to my delight, just like Yoo Ha's Dirty Carnival from 2006, this movie delivered everything it promises and more.

Without giving too much away, it is important for to clarify that while this movie DOES explore the issue of homosexuality and bisexuality, I think Yoo Ha's ultimate goal is to show that true love KNOWS no GENDER. Worst still is how fast the heart can change when love hits.

One definitely needs an open mind for this piece but the wonderful jobs done by all the three main actors are simply superb. It was difficult and painful to watch but so gripping that I could not look away.

Enjoy.
