This film has gotten rave reviews across the board, and I have to say it was one of my least favorite films of this year. The concept was fascinating, and the early parts of the film, while sad and disturbing are very gripping. The problem is that for a film "based" on a real event, it stays far too close to the even to be good beginning to end. The movie takes a terrible tragic twist, one which pretty much kills the film as it puts the moviegoer in a position where almost nothing could wrap up the film in a satisfactory manner. And the director doesn't, as the ending is a total cop out. The movie is also painfully long, with the brutal depression of the characters just extended far too long for anyone to care. This is totally one of these asian films that gets rave reviews in the states because people misunderstand "paced badly" and "confusing" for "thought provoking". Just awful. |
