程耀堂本是鄉間首富，因好賭散盡家財，便與妻及三女仲蓮進城投靠富裕的二女婿煥章。章以為堂身懷巨款，對其大獻殷勤，堂二女仲華知章拜金，沒有說出其父已一貧如洗。堂雖今非昔比，仍派頭十足，不肯與窮人為伍。堂妻明白章的為人，堅持搬去與當工人的大女仲芳同住，自食其力。堂與蓮仍留章家。芳家雖窮，卻健康愉快，家人感情融洽。不久，章發現堂無錢，本想把其送走，剛巧債主紹良臨門，看上蓮，章便答應育成良的好事，然後把蓮騙往酒店。良迫蓮就範，蓮掙扎逃走，失足墮樓受傷，良被警方拘留。章窮途末路，自殺身亡。堂、華、蓮經過此事後，才真正明白生活的意義。

A timeless classic
A timeless classic
| This film was first released in October, 1953 - over 50 years ago! Hats off yet again to those dedicated film workers at Chung-Lian Studio for producing yet another classic piece of work. If only they knew how much people like me appreciate their efforts even to this day! Hats off also to those who put this film on VCDs so it can be made easily available to a wide audience. |
