Li Ching, star of Sweet is Revenge, plays one of three daughters, whose life is turned upside down when she discovers she is adopted. But things get even worse when she goes in search of her real mother. Once she finds her, she is exposed to a world of vice, lust, hatred, and violence. Finally, after almost a double tragedy, she realizes what so many knew all along: There's no place like home. Supporting the life-affirming message is Ouyang Sha-fei as the long-suffering, but noble, adoptive mother.

Not Li Ching's Best Customer Review Rated Bad 2 - 2 out of 10
I would have to highly disagree with the previous reviews. Li Ching is a wonderful actress, and she showed it in the film, but this film was not worthy of her talent. This movie made me want to pull my nails out of my fingers and make a necklace out of it. It bore me to tears. It was very unrealistic, and her evil jealous sister was just annoying if anything else. The movie seemed overally dramatic, and very slow. I highly do not recommend it.

Flawed, but good enough... Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
'A Place to Call Home'(1968) is a decent, yet misfired Shaw Brothers-produced remake of the MP&GI/Cathay family-drama 'Mambo Girl'(1960). Ivy(Li Ching), is a happy-go-lucky schoolgirl from a well-to-do family. Ivy's sister(Margaret Hsing Hui) envies Ivy because her boyfriend is more good-looking than hers and of Ivy's good reputation at school. One day, Ivy's sister finds out that her popular sister is adopted while her parents(Yan Jun and Ouyang Shafei) speak to a guy in charge of a nearby orphange. Ivy's sister tells this to her face; Ivy goes from happy-go-lucky to depressed and she goes in search of her real parents. Ivy tracks down her biological mother(her biological father died in a car crash) and she plans on living with her. However, when Ivy finds out that her real mother(Go Bu Shu) works as a hostess in a seedy bar and her "Uncle"(Yang Chi-ching) looks lustfully at her, trouble is on the way!
'Place' successfully reproduces the humor, melodrama, and humanity of 'Mambo Girl'...for about 2/3 into the picture. After that point, things derail and the potential for 'Place' to be a good movie and a good remake of 'Mambo Girl' fizzles. Still, 'Place' has some things going for it: it has some solid acting, Wu Jia Xiang's direction is capable, and the scene where Ivy's "uncle" almost rapes her is quite chilling. The scene where Ivy and her sister sing an upbeat song about their parents felt like a similar scene from the Disney film, 'The Parent Trap'(the one with Hayley Mills). Also, Irene Chen Yi Ling, who appears as one of Ivy's friends, does a good acting job. I recommend 'Mambo Girl' instead of, and in addition, to 'A Place to Call Home'.

Satisfactory Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
This movie is better than I thoughteven though Li Jing didn't seem comfortable playing her part. Actress You Ming of HER TENDER HEART was better at this kind of role. Actor Yan Jun showed good depth of emotions.

A place to call home Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Li Ching was unconvincing as a school girl. But on the whole it was a good movie, at times emotions were overplayed. Veteran Yen Chun, who played Li Ching's father, stole the show.
