本來一向相安無事，一班歌手亦樂得每周一聚來個名曲滿天星，可惜終有曲終人散的一日。受到大財團的逼迫，今晚將會是《原野良伴》的最後一集，到底他們會否告知聽眾這個消息？還是一如以往與聽眾說聲下周見？
正所謂屋漏更兼逢夜雨，節目要收檔，加上老拍檔的突然離世，一眾唱家班將會如何面對？
Central to the story are Yolanda and Rhonda Johnson (MERYL STREEP and LILY TOMLIN), the last two sisters remaining in what was once a four sister country music act, Yolanda's daughter, Lola (LINDSAY LOHAN), GARRISON KEILLOR (as himself) and the singing cowboys Dusty and Lefty (WOODY HARRELSON and JOHN C. REILLY). Also featured are a DANGEROUS WOMAN (Virginia Madsen) who materializes, somewhat mysteriously, backstage, and Guy Noir (KEVIN KLINE), the show's security guard, who experiences his days and nights according to the conventions of a Raymond Chandler novel. An imperious stage manager and his assistant, Molly (Saturday Night Live's MAYA RUDOLPH), try their best to keep an increasingly rudderless show on course as an outsider (TOMMY LEE JONES) arrives to shut the program down.
