Adapted from the film of the same name, 2006 TBS drama A Song to the Sun, a.k.a. Taiyo no Uta, continues the recent wave of "pure love" stories from Japan. While the film stars singer YUI and Tsukamoto Takashi, the drama features the equally appealing pairing of Sawajiri Erika and Yamada Takayuki, both familiar faces of the genre. Heartthrob Yamada Takayuki starred in the 2004 TBS romance Crying Out Love, In the Center of the World, while Sawajiri Erika rose to stardom in 2005 as the tragic heroine of Fuji TV's 1 Liter of Tears. Two of Japan's most popular and promising young stars, Sawajiri Erika and Yamada Takayuki actually worked together in both film (Tegami) and television in 2006, and their easy chemistry and natural performances bring alive this beautiful love story.

When she was eight years old, Amane Kaoru (Sawajiri Erika) was diagnosed with xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), a rare skin disease that makes exposure to direct sunlight a deadly risk. Most people afflicted with XP do not live past the age of 20. Unable to live the life of a normal teenager, Kaoru can only stay at home during the day and wander the streets at night. One night she picks up a guitar left behind by Koji (Yamada Takayuki), thus discovering her passion for singing and songwriting; Kaoru's biggest dream is to be able to sing on stage, just like singer Tachibana Asami (Matsushita Nao). Koji in turn finds love and inspiration in Kaoru, grateful for the time they have together. They form a band with Kaoru's friends, and soon their talent attracts the attention of a record producer. Just when it seems that Kaoru's dream will come true, her condition takes a turn for the worse.
