In 2002, Japan is hit by a series of devastating natural disasters. After a wave of earthquakes and the eruption of Mt. Fuji, Japan is left completely devastated, with the archipelago split in half. The Japanese government has no choice but to seek assistance from other countries, and allow the entry of Chinese and American troops. However, 15 years later, the reconstruction of Japan is still dragging with no end in sight, and northern and southern Japan have become colonies of China and USA. Youth Ryu Genichiro, a Japanese refugee who grew up in Taiwan, is caught in the increasingly bitter conflict between Taiwan's local and refugee population. With his strong convictions and beliefs, Genichiro hopes to mediate the conflict in Taiwan, opening a new page for Japan's future.

Adapted from the Kawaguchi Kaiji manga, two-episode OVA A Spirit of the Sun presents a compelling and searing vision of post-apocalyptic Japan. Rather than the usual sci-fi themes, the series explores the political, historical, and social issues and implications. The story references the classic sci-fi novel Nippon Chinbotsu, recently adapted for the big screen as Sinking of Japan, and runs into all new directions with the premise. As WOWOW station's 15th anniversary production, A Spirit of the Sun comes in top-notch animation to complement its meaty story.

2002年日本發生了一連串的黎克特制8.8級的大地震﹗這一連串位於東海、東南海及南海的大地震更令富士山開始爆發，海水倒流並將日本列島分割成南北兩大面。
