The producers of A Tale of Mari and Three Puppies return to explore the sometimes magical relationship between humans and dogs in A Tale of Ululu's Wonderful Forest. Filmed in picturesque Hokkaido, Ululu is a warm story about two children's quest to reunite a special creature with his mother. Directed by TV director Nakanuma Makoto with a score by famed composer Hisaishi Joe, Ululu is a touching drama that the whole family can enjoy.
When their mother becomes ill, siblings Subaru (Kuwashiro Takaaki) and Shizuku (Kitamura Sara) are sent to Hokkaido to spend the summer with their veterinarian father (Funakoshi Eichiro). Spending their days with their aunt Chie (Fukada Kyoko, Yatterman) in the forest, the kids soon meet a small, wolf-like dog that they name Ululu. When people suspect Ululu to be a rare breed of wolf, the kids decide to go off on a journey to protect him from researchers and to reunite him with his mother.

Subaru (Takaaki Kuwashiro) and his little sister Shizuku (Sara Kitamura) must stay with their estranged father Daiji (Eiichiro Funakoshi) after their mother Natsuko (Sachiko Sakurai) is hospitalized. The pressures on the kids are numerous: their mom's prognosis is unknown; their father, a country veterinarian, is distracted by work and cannot seem to realize the kids need him; and the move from the big city to their new and beautiful natural surroundings is jarring. Shizuku seems to be dealing with the change better than her brother. While Subaru is uncomfortable with the unfamiliar setting and an unopened letter from his mother, Shizuku finds the new environment fascinating, and soon bonds with a puppy "Ululu" that resembles a baby wolf.
