YesAsia Editorial Description

Director Wong Jing delivers a tough, unexpected triad drama with A True Mob Story. Superstar Andy Lau is Cheung Dee, a low-level triad boss who won fame when he saved superior triad boss Prince (Mark Cheng) from certain death at the hands of the vicious Crazy Ball (Ben Ng). But the years since his famous act have not been kind. Once a righteous, passionate man, Dee is now a spineless patsy who steals credit instead of earning it himself. But when he's set up by his bosses, Dee must take a stand. Can he regain the righteousness of his youth? Andy Lau delivers a powerhouse performance, and director-writer Wong Jing delivers an emotionally complex story. In this bold take on the triad genre, a good man must regain his self-respect by rising up against the same triad underworld that nearly destroyed him. Featuring a packed cast of top Hong Kong stars, including Gigi Leung, Alex Fong and Sam Lee, A True Mob Story surprises with a dark, romantic triad tale that's entertaining, uncompromising, and utterly compelling.

Professional Review of "A True Mob Story (US Version)"

March 17, 2006

This professional review refers to A True Mob Story (VCD) (Hong Kong Version)
A comeback movie, of sorts, this is Wong Jing and Andy Lau's hack at the straight drama, and hack they do. Supposedly based on a true story (events in the life of Wong Jing's boss, Charles Heung) this movie mixes the Wong Jing drama with the triad boyz genre, throws in Andy Lau and stirs well. Lau plays a small-time hood who goes batty one night when his boss (Alex Fong) is threatened by Crazy Ball (Ben Ng, giving a saliva spewing nutcase performance). No one expects much from this low-level car parking boy, and when he grabs a chopper and lays waste to Crazy Ball everyone's taken off guard. Promoted up the ranks, Lau's position quickly outstrips his courage, and he relies on his pals Sam Lee and Ng Chi-hung (that sawed-off pepperpot of the gangster movie) to save his skin on a regular basis.

Things rapidly go awry as Alex Fong decides he wants Andy's girlfriend, as Crazy Ball comes back from the dead, as Andy enlists his lawyer (Gigi Leung) in his cause, and he gets caught up in a pirate VCD smuggling ring. Andy is gormless and lots of fun as a terminal coward who has nothing going for him but his talent for wriggling out of tight spots, and Alex Fong is despicable as his rapacious boss. The triad heads are a rogues gallery of Hong Kong character actors: Chan Wai-man (who played Tiger Au in Jackie Chan's Project A II, and who was an actual triad boss), Ho Ka-kui (notorious for playing scum), and Wong Tin-lam (Wong Jing's corpulent dad).

The violence in this movie is intense and skin-crawling as sledgehammers are applied to the backs of heads, pickaxes sink into spines, hapless triad boyz are hogtied with barbed wire soaked in chili oil, and a rival triad member is beaten to a pulp inside a burlap bag while a children's birthday party takes place in the other room.

A refreshing triad change of pace, this movie was generally well received, with Andy getting special props for his acting. It gets bogged down in some boring courtroom shenanigans in the eleventh hour, but it's hard to see Lau and Wong Jing in finer modern form than this.

Very satisfied Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This movies has a good story and great acting from everyone. Andy Lau's performance is often hit or miss, it's definitely a hit in this one. And the video quality is excellent. Buying Hong Kong movie DVDs from different publishers is also hit or miss. But Mei Ah DVDs consistently have excellent image and sound quality, unlike publishers like Joy Sales, whose DVD quality is quite awful. Way to go Mei Ah!

Good Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
This movie was made from the base of true story, so it's little bit realistic about the gang society. But Andy was really handsome and cool, so I liked it, but it was sad he was killed in the end right after he could win at the court!! Well, but this is the true society of Gangstar???
