YesAsia Editorial Description

Infernal Affairs co-director Alan Mak helms A War Named Desire, a gripping, stylish crime film set in the sweltering heat of Thailand. Chun (Daniel Chan) journeys from Hong Kong to Thailand to search for his long-lost brother Charles (Francis Ng), but he doesn't seek reconciliation. Now a triad boss, Charles left the family under difficult circumstances, and Chun only desires money - and perhaps a glimpse of his mysterious brother's face. But rival gangsters use Chun against Charles, which forces the older brother to make a fateful decision: to follow the code of the underworld and allow his brother's death, or to honor his family and save his younger sibling. Both paths come with consequences, but Charles can only live with one choice...

A stunning crime film told in powerful, stylish strokes, A War Named Desire features a charismatic lead performance from Francis Ng, and an eye-opening supporting turn from pop songstress Gigi Leung. As Snow, Charles' acquaintance and unrequited lover, Gigi Leung displays towering presence and even a world-weary resolve that belies her willowy looks. Dave Wang and Sam Lee provide welcome character support, and Alan Mak orchestrates exciting, suspenseful action sequences that recall the heroic bloodshed of years past! A War Named Desire earns its cinema wings through a stunning symphony of blood, sweat, and tragic tears.

Professional Review of "A War Named Desire (Taiwan Version)"

November 8, 2005

This professional review refers to A War Named Desire
With a sweaty funk hanging over the rotting sets, and family ties stretched throughout like bloody ropes, A War Named Desire is a genre picture that rises way above its roots and becomes a stylish, low-budget programmer that earns the respect it's owed with body blows and coupon-clipping gunfights. One part Full Contact and one part A Hero Never Dies poured over The Mission and served cold. Gigi Lai and Francis Ng rise up like poisonous flowers twenty minutes in and decisively steal the show from the kids who started it. From that point on it's Francis' movie and the audience is pinned to his body - knotted like a tense muscle and sporting a kinky little perm. The movie drifts through Thailand in his wake, the country depicted as one enormous border town full of sweat and death and people running from their pasts.

Young Hong Kong pretty boy, Jones (Daniel Chan) heads down into Thailand to find his brother, Charles (Francis Ng), who absconded with the family savings a dimly-remembered 15 years ago. With interest, Jones has decided the sum now comes to $2 million, and the enigmatic Charles hands it over. "There's no such thing as a free lunch," he glowers, presses a gun into Jones' hand, points it at the head of a trembling hostage, and pulls the trigger. It's about then that Jones realizes that this is going to be a little bit more complex than he thought. His girlfriend, Jess, has tagged along for the ride and she quickly becomes a casualty of a seething Chinatown war just starting to spill over the sides. It's a family movie from hell as Charles, his partner, York, and York's sister, the ice-cold hitwoman, Snow all find themselves on the wrong ends of each other's guns.

Taking a cue or six from Milkyway Image, scored with burning flamenco guitars of death, A War Named Desire is one of the better movies to come out of Hong Kong in 2000. Francis Ng is locked-down and intense, and Daniel Chan and Pace Wu effectively play pampered urbanite fluff. It's Gigi Leung, surprisingly, who really shines. Her weary hitwoman, Snow, has a world of trauma and pain behind her dull ice eyes, and she moves with the resignation of someone who knows that whatever happens next will be more horrible than what happened before.

A Refreshing Change Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
A War Named Desire is a different type of movie from all the over movies that has recently come out of Hong Kong. This movie comes off as a sleek but grim story about two brothers who are blocked off from each brother by previous family conflicts. There are standout performances by Francis Ng and Gigi Leung. Daniel Chan is looking for his older brother, played by Francis Ng in Thailand. This movie carries itself as a fairly fast-paced and eventful drama. Things happen to the four main characters of the movie (Francis, Daniel, Gigi, and Dave Wang) and their lives are forever changed. A very involving and highly recommended movie. Gigi Leung was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in this movie. -Vincent

Good movies like this are rare now Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"A War Named Desire" rises above all the cheesy and stupid movies that Hong Kong seems to be producing for the last couple of years. It is a thoroughly enjoyable film that captivated me with its fascinating characters. The story is about Chun who is looking for his brother. His brother left the family for Thailand 15 years ago with $50,000. His brother is now involved with criminal activity and when Chun arrives in Thailand, they go through life changing experiences together. The plot does have a few holes in it and the sometimes over-the-top action breaks the atmosphere of realism, but all in all, this is a very enjoyable movie.
