YesAsia Editorial Description
Atmospheric horror comes to Hong Kong in A Wicked Ghost! Newspaper reporter Cissy (sexy Gigi Lai) investigates the scene of a young man's death, only to discover the beginning of a horrifying supernatural killing spree. The young man was involved in a grisly seance along some other friends, including Ming (Gabriel Harrison), who declined to participate in their attempts at otherwordly communication. When the other seanceparticipants start dying, Cissy and Ming enlist the help of a ghost expert (Francis Ng) to aid them in their search for the undead. The trail eventually leads them to a New Territories village just as more people begin to mysteriously die. Who is responsible for these deaths, and can the trio of Hong Kong citizens stop them? Boasting local Hong Kong flavor, and a suffocating atmospheric dread, A Wicked Ghost is a chilling, suspenseful entry into a popular Hong Kong genre.

Not as bad as some people say
|
This really isnt as bad as some people say. Think Japanese Ring but done less well. In other words, it has all the elements of the Ring, vengeful female ghost, friends only having so long to live until the ghost is set free and tracing the origins of the ghosts demise and finding her body buried in a pond. Its a bit funny at the beginning cos theres a bit where the reporter receives a video and it has the Ring video on it. The scary bits are just as jumpy as the Ring but I never considered the Ring to be a horror film, more like a mystery creepy ghost story and thats what A Wicked Ghost is. And for people who harp on about 'not another long black-haired-hanging-down-over-the-face girl' I have to say I have no problem with this. The reason I like this one is that her face is not revealed all that much but when you do see it, its much scarier than similar characters in in similar films. And anyway, as someone said somewhere else, most east asian girls do have long straight black hair. The problem is not the ghost, it is a scary looking one and she appears frequently in film right from the beginning so there are not too many long gaps before you see her again. The storyline is basic but easy to follow, but the film lacks polish and is a bit rambling. The thing I hated most about it was the english subtitles - dreadful! Really bad. I had to keep re-winding to read them and then think of an equilvalent english phrase. I also did not like the nasal high pitched singing - but it is Chinese after all. All in all, I think that if this film was more polished and had a bigger budget, it would have the same feel as the japanese Ring. It really had potential. I bought the sequel which I was dissappointed with after seeing this one. |

The best horror film NOT
|
Instead of making a horror movie, they made a horrible movie. You can put Andy Lau, Donnie Yen and whoever here but the show just sucks big time. I am puzzled that it even got sequels!! Dont get fooled by the cover. One of worst I have seen. The producer should get an assassin to kill the director and then find another assassin to kill himself. Only a lame producer and a dumb director that can tricked me to fall into this trap. |

Wicked?
|
This movie is ABYSMAL! The cover looks tacky so I should have judged this on appearance alone, but instead I'm influenced by ratings and reviews. The acting is awful, the script or translation is senseless, cinematography is amateur and the editing is, quite frankly, annoying! The effects are cheap! I was so glad it only lasted 82 minutes but was frustrated that I'd wasted my time. |

could be much better

It started off well but as the story progressed, it became unscientific and the ending is poor. The Chinese just like capturing your attention for a while then ended everything in an abrupt manner. This ghost is a very unreasonable ghost. |

Terrifying!
|
Omg! This definitaly one of my all-time fav horror flicks! I was never really a big fan of HK horror movies, because I've seen many of them previously, but they were just not as scary as all those great horror flicks from Japan. But this is a really old HK one, it was released back in 1999, and it's still stuck in my head! What makes this movie so terrifying is the ghost! Honestly, she is the most horrifying looking ghost ever! I sometimes have nightmares about her face! And the sound she makes really spooks u out! I have to admit that after watching this one, I'm starting to wonder if HK is losing it's horror touch; because this one is just so bone-chilling, it certainly beats many of the ones from Japan! But all the HK horror flicks which were made after this one (which I watched) are just average and sometimes they do spook u abit from time to time, but nothing to actually give u chills. So yeah, if u love horror movies, then this one is for u! |
