YesAsia Editorial Description

The Eye made the world take notice of twins The Pang Brothers, and now the duo take on the role of producers in a film starring sister-act 2R and directed by Pang Shun! The film follows the usual thriller suspense style that made the Pang Brothers famous, Ab-normal Beauty deals with a young woman suffering from psychological disorder, and with 2R's debut they break with their girl-next-door image to take on violence and provocative scenes, making this film ever more special.

Ab-normal Beauty is shot mostly in Thailand, and the story evolves around a picture of an accident and a haunting memory from childhood, that slowly drives Wing Kay (2R's Race) to insanity! She begins to develop an obsession with taking photos of death, slowly unlocking the violent tendencies within her, but to Wing Kay, she believes she is developing art...

An intervention by her close friend Bak Pay (2R's Rosanna) makes her realize her wrongful ways. At the same time of her awakening, a killer begins to approach Wing Kay, with the killer's behavior identical to her own! This made her go back into the dark path, and she isn't the only one! Thus begin a psychological war between the killer and the hunter...

Professional Review of "Ab-normal Beauty (DTS Version)"

December 13, 2005

Oxide Pang's Ab-Normal Beauty, the companion film to brother Danny Pang's Leave Me Alone, holds onto the Pang stylistic norms that have made them famous: painterly composition, cool colour design, and a penchant for un-necessary editing. However, Ab-Normal Beauty isn't without some major drawbacks.

There are two things that let this film down. Firstly, Hong Kong pop duo 2R are simply not good actors, especially when trying deliver some heart-felt lines. The tension between the film's main characters, Jin (Race Wong) and Jas (Rosanne Wong) feels unconvincing: maybe it didn't occur to Oxide, but casting two people to play sexually intimate friends when the actors are sisters doesn't have much chance of yielding a natural performance. The second let-down is the film's plot, which is surprising, as the Pang brothers are usually quite innovative and proficient at structuring a film. The way that Oxide illustrates Jin's self destruction and descent into perversion through the photography of the deceased doesn't quite hit the mark. Jin's embrace of perversion seems to spring out of a vacuum too early in the film, thus inhibiting the viewer's connection with her as the film's central protagonist. Furthermore, her descent, which is inter-cut with various flashbacks and dreams that liken her obsession with death to an abusive childhood, is a touch well-worn.

Negatives aside, Ab-Normal Beauty does offer something for those who enjoy visual beauty and stylistic flair. The film's images are superbly composed; nice decentered close ups, with a variety of bold lighting schemes that skilfully reflect upon the photography-centred narrative. Furthermore, these images are emphasized by Oxide's adept understanding of the use of music. The film successfully marries a variety of styles of music to accompany the MTV-like visuals. The sound in this film tends to be more successfully emotive than most other mood thrillers. A most memorable point in the film is when Jin and Jas take to the streets, SLR cameras tightly in hand, taking snapshots of the city-scape all against the backdrop of classically romantic string music. What a nice and contrived way to romanticize the importance of photography early on in the film. Only the Pang brothers can pull off a bold move such as this!

Ab-Normal Beauty doesn't stir up much excitement or suspense, but it is a film that you can enjoy for the fantastic plasticity of Oxide's visual and audio splendour, and isn't it the sensory barrage that we ultimately love about the Pangs? If not for its sensory pleasure, then looking at Race Wong roughly chained to a chair, or discussing Anson Leung's bizarre likeness to Ekin Cheng may elicit some more trivial entertainment. Some may even find it rewarding to psychoanalyse the deep and dark recesses of Jin's perverted mind, yet I don't advise it.

Up there. Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
A welcome to the slowly evapourating life of the once booming Hong Kong cinema. The dark plot is stylish and refreshing, bringing the feel of suspense back into Hong Kong movies....However, the whole movie is ultimately let down by the closing act, which is not only ridculous but tedious as well. The acting is in obvious need of improvement for both leading actresses, even so they do a okay job portraying their respectable characters. I would recommend this film to anyone looking for something dark and psychological, but be warned that you might be let down by the overall turnout. Still, you could always switch the film off before watching the ending.... 7/10

Disappointing Customer Review Rated Bad 2 - 2 out of 10
It is clear from recent product released separately by the Pangs that they produce MUCH better films when working together than they do when working apart.
Oxide Pang seems to really need Danny's steadying influence to keep him from going too far off the rails in balancing style versus narrative.
This IS a very stylishly-made film, I do not deny that. The direction is superb. And 2R do very well in their roles. BUT WHERE WAS THE STORY?
Just as Danny needs Oxide's wild side to liven up his dull films like "Leave Me Alone", Oxide clearly needs Danny's steady eye for perhaps more mainstream cinema to keep ANY suspense and/or narrative running through a film.
I was really looking forward to this film, but I ultimately felt let down by the lack of exciting plot or even a reason to root for the characters.
Oxide's "Abnormal Beauty" is all style and no content, whereas Danny has his feet on the ground with "Leave Me Alone" but his film has no real style.
It seems that, together, the Pangs work extremely well. (Unequalled, in many respects.)
When they're apart, based on this recent evidence, they just . . . . don't.

Weird and Wonderful Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Ignore the film description above as it does nothing for a film that should be received with recognition.

A combination of Japanese and Hollywood style, the film portrays a woman with a loss of identity. The pace and filming is beautifully accurate and when watching the film, you would never guess that it is a Hong Kong production. Thumbs up for the director and cinemagrapher.

Style over Content Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Another new horror-thriller entry from the Pang brothers with new beauty faces of 2R and young kid Chun-i Leung. On the whole, the movie can be seen as organized into 3 parts: (1) Race's obsession with photographing the dead & deceased; (2) Psychological recovery of Race from dead art obsession; & (3) incoming a snuff film psycho-killer & the final confrontation with Race.

The film excels in the stylistic editing of the Pang Brothers & the cool cinematography and art direction team coming with a whole Thai crew. However, the cinematic images are too filled up with ideas borrowed directly from Georges Franju's Eyes Without A Face & Blood of the Beasts. The third part of the film narative also takes full advantage of Alejandro Amenabar's debut, Tesis. Though the last part is also the most violent one, the mystery element of whodunit fails to build up the necessary tension & the resolution looks too laughably naive and unconvincing.

The movie is still worth a watch as a rare HK product with images that look more Euro-cult than the standard Hollywood-style. It would be too good if the Pang Brothers can work out a better script but keep up with the hybrid of Euro-horror elements & a unique Asian setting.
