There is always a sense of fondness when looking at the short film. Part of that has to do with being exposed too often to ideas and stories forcibly drawn out to meet certain time expectations, so that when one comes across a short film that gets to its point and does it well, it's always refreshing. Besides which, that sense of a bite of culture without the commitment of a full feature appeals to my capricious, contrary nature. This certainly does not hurt the reception of the anthology About Love. Made up of three films made by three different directors from three different locales, all 'about love', the problem of do they or don't they and do I have to sit through this once again never really becomes a cognizant thought. Of the three, personal preferences lean towards Yee Chi-Yen's middle offering set in Taipei. Following the attempted reconciliation of Mavis Fan's A-Su and her recent ex-boyfriend, there is a definite warmth between the two leads that leads to a little tension but more often adds a certain playfulness to their performances. Most impressive is that, of the three films, this one has the most direct interaction between the two central characters and the greatest attempt to observe cross-language communication. Ten Shimoyama's opening film set in Tokyo follows closely. While lacking the direct interaction of the Taiwanese production, there is still a strong exploration of emotion through the art of Ito Misaki's Ichiko and the friends of Chen Bo-Lin's Yao and their little struggles. The Tokyo story tends to be more wistful, but then the main leads only meet face to face twice. Zhang Yibai's Shanghai contribution was probably the weakest of the three. While feeling the same degree of longing as the Tokyo story, Shanghai's core premise was the unspoken and tragic love of a teenager, for whom I feel little empathy. While Li Xiao lu's Yun shows a little maturity in her day to day dealings with Takashi Tsukamoto's Shu hei, and his failed romance at home, the way she romanticizes him is not something I find worth exploring short of remembering how dumb one can be as a teenager. About Love holds together as a whole quite well and is often entertaining. The simple central theme of characters falling in and out of love is not the most challenging material but definitely sufficient to generate enough warm fuzzies to get you through to the next day. 7.5 Languages in the Film out of 10 By Eugene Chan |

"About Love" really is about youthful yearning for love and affection. The theme is depicted here in three engaging short films. The first film is the slickest and most sentimental and offers a sweet ending. The second film is the edgiest; it resembles a film school project. I identified with the male character's struggle to communicate and found the ending to be the most poignant. The third film is the most heartbreaking. The lead actors and actresses in all three films are gorgeous and handle their roles well. The filmmaking is naive, but absorbing. The time flew by as I watched this film; that's always a good sign! Highly recommended by your humble servant. |

This movie of 3 stories has it all; humour, love, loneliness, friendship, sadness...the stories and styles of film-making are very different and each one is excellent. I almost feel like I got 3 movies in one, well worth the money! The first story set in Tokyo I would say caters to the romantics in all of us. A modern fairytale of love by chance in a big, lonely city. A good looking, young Chinese guy falls for a Japanese artist. The second story is more about realism I think, about the complexities of relationships and it's verious forms. But don't let the realism put you off, it is the most hilarious of the 3 and features the most adorable male character ever in the history of film! The third story is much more tragic. A Chinese girl is seretly in love with her Japanese lodger, but does nothing to reveal her feelings. The actress does an amazing job of conveying the innocence of first love, and I must say the ending left me quite speechless. To sum it up, watch it! There needs to be more movies like this. |

TOKYO - anyone who enjoyed the photography in Chung King express should love this film. it was all over far too soon for me. i think its a wonderful little story. i know i havent seen anything like it before. its worth buying the dvd simply for this film. 10/10 TAIPEI - i hated this one. i thought it was ok at the beginning and just got worse until i couldnt wait for the end. the japanese guys chinese sounded very poor, and while i know chinese is a difficult language to master, to have to listen to an absolute beginner with a very strong accent speak for a long time (and consistently get it wrong) was really grating. towards the end the girl asks the boy to pass on a message for her to her ex. when he gets back she asks him what her ex said. he spends the next 5 mins (literally) trying to tell her, making the same mistake over and over. we never do find out what her ex said! i never want to watch this film again. 1/10 SHANGHAI - this film is sweet and gentle, although i didnt sense any chemistry between the boy and girl despite a lot of interaction. i especially liked one scene where the girl looks at the boy through a glass. i thought this was a very clever and unique shot. 6/10 |

waste of time and money!
| I bought this DVD because of the nice reviews. But I'm very disappointed! I don't know if we all watched the same movie or we are just from different planets. I think the film is quite a waste of time!! |

a tale of 3 cities
| I saw this movie at the Hawaii International Film Festival last year. Wonderful film about cross cultural relationships in 3 different cities (Tokyo, Tapei, Shanghai). I liked the tokyo story the best. The tapei story gives you insight on how people use each other in relationships. Shanghai story was a bit strange but fun. |
