Abracadabra (VCD) (Hong Kong Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Equal parts Poltergeist, Ghostbusters, and Dawn of the Dead, the Raymond Wong-scripted Abracadabra (1986) borrows liberally from the tropes of Hollywood's FX-heavy haunted house pictures. But the result - an eccentric yet entertaining mishmash of situation comedy and horror film - could only have been made in Hong Kong. Starring Ann Bridgewater and Charine Chan (two of Wong's prefab acting/singing ensemble "Happy Girls Troupe"), and directed by genre-master Peter Mak (Wicked City), Abracadabra will appeal immensely to fans of the supernatural action-horror-comedies that were a hallmark of 1980s Hong Kong Cinema.

Two friends, Lili and Cici (Bridgewater and Chan), open a fashion boutique in a shopping arcade constructed on the site of a theatre that, years ago, was the scene of a mass exorcism conducted by a squad of Taoist ninjas (don't ask). The spiritual cleansing wasn't a complete success, however, and soon the girls are being haunted by a vengeful ghost - as well as a pair of male hairstylists (the decidedly heterosexual Mark Cheng and Rambo Tung) who rent the space next-door. When Cici is spirited away to the netherworld by the demon, Lili and the boys enlist the aid of a paranormal expert (played by director Peter Mak). Armed with some high-tech ghostbusting equipment, the gang undertakes a literal journey to Hell and back to save Cici - but only after unwittingly raising an army of the living dead!
