Sam Hui and Karl Maka reteam for the fifth and final installment of the ultra popular Aces Go Places series. This time the duo get some powerful reinforcement in the form of pop superstar Leslie Cheung, beauty queen Nina Li, and action star Conan Lee. Revered martial arts choreographer Master Lau Kar Leung signs up as director to give this comedy adventure movie a boost in the action department.
The terracotta warriors and the sword of Qin Emperor, being on exhibition in Hong Kong, are stolen by the White Gloves and the "New Best Partners" (Leslie Cheung and Nina Li) respectively. But the original Best Partners (Sam Hui and Karl Maka) are framed for the heist, so they have no choice but to come out of retirement to clear their names. Pursued by the White Gloves and the police, the old and new Best Partners form an alliance in their mad mission to locate the national treasures. Meanwhile, a kung fu cop (Conan Lee) sent by the Chinese authorities is also hot on their heels...

Still Ace

So, here I am in June/2011. My review below was only dated Feb/2011 but I've actually watched the movie way before then. Then why am I here again? Well, I couldn't help myself and bought the digitally remastered version. They've done a good job, pictures were clearer and thank goodness, original voices. This is important to me cause with these remastered versions (as I've discovered with a few), they replace certain actor's voice (I've a few done for Jackie, Yuen Biao, Sammo, etc). When that happens, it turns me off. So, you can safely get this one. Enjoy!! |

Last Ace on the Block

Apart from the first 2 "Aces Go Places", this last one is about the 3rd best out of the 5 in the series. By the time I lay my hands on one (a couple of years back), I was desperate enough to buy even the vcd in canto audio. Leslie did not disappoint, teaming up with Nina Li portraying his sister. The old partner- magic of Karl and Sam were still there. With fantastic comedic timing, these 4 will have you in stitches. For Leslie fans, dvds like these are getting rarer than hen's teeth. Unless some other company decides to do a 'digitally remastered' version, better buy this first. |
