白昼のニューヨーク黒人街ハーレムでマフィアの金３０万ドルが奪われ、警官を含む７人がマシンガンで射ち殺された。犯人は黒人の３人組だ。警察とマフィアがそれぞれのメンツをかけて犯人探しにやっきになる。ニューヨーク警察は、長年ハーレムを仕切ってきたベテラン警部マテリに替えて、新人の黒人刑事ポープを抜擢。マフィア側はボスの娘婿ニックが強引に犯人を追いつめるが、黒人ギャングのドクはそれを苦々しく思っていた。マフィアがついに犯人を追いつめた。警察も急行し、凄まじい銃撃戦が始まった……。アカデミー賞俳優アンソニー・クインが製作総指揮と主演を兼任、黒人ギャングとイタリア系マフィアの抗争に加え、汚職が横行していた７０年代初頭のニューヨーク警察の内情を活写した７０’ｓブラック・アクションの快作。ボビー・ウーマックが歌う主題歌も大ヒット、『ジャッキー・ブラウン』『アメリカン・ギャングスター』でも使用された名曲だ。
