「生まれたのは、愛されるため。生きるのは、愛するため。」今も自然が残る山間の町に暮らす真柴家の７人家族。愛情溢れるタクシー運転手の父・徹生(竹中直人)、しっかり者の長女・みちる(綾瀬はるか)、これと思うと真っ直ぐに打ち込む長男・豪(市原隼人)、のんびり屋の小学生の次男・幌(神木隆之介)、お兄ちゃんの後を追うばかりの幼い次女・唄(松本梨菜)、家族を見守る優しい母・由美(原田美枝子)、そして家族を支えてくれる祖父・明示(杉浦直樹)。ある日、由美が倒れ、入院することになった。母の入院中、みちるが母代わりになって家事をこなし、豪は自分が入院費を稼ぐといって、学校が終わるとバイトに励んでいた。だが、入院していた由美が、突然家に帰ってくる。喜ぶ子供たちとは反対に、徹生は血相を変えて由美を強引に連れ戻す。子供たちは、一転、母の病状に不安を募らせる…。
