カナダ、プリンスエドワード島のグリーンゲーブルズに住むマシュウとマリラの兄妹は、孤児院から働き手の男の子を引き取ろうとします。しかし、手違いにより、空想好きな赤毛の女の子、アンがやって来ます。駅まで迎えにいったマシュウは、期待に胸を膨らませているアンにその事実を伝えられません。二人は、馬車でグリーンゲーブルズへと向かいます。その道中、並木道や湖の美しさに心を奪われたアンは、それらに名前をつけて愛情を表します。女性が苦手なマシュウも、このちょっぴり風変わりな女の子には、なぜか好感を抱き始めていました。しかし、「男の子はどこ？」というマリラの一言で、事態が判明します。一転、絶望のどん底に落とされたアンは、悲しみに打ちひしがれながら一夜を明かします。それでも、翌朝、窓辺から見える世界の美しさに触れ、とにかく今日を楽しもうと決心するのでした。アンを孤児院へ戻すため、マリラとアンは、馬車でスペンサー夫人の家へと向かいます。その道中、自分の身の上を話すアン。そのわずかなおしゃべりを通じて、マリラもアンに対し不思議な魅力を感じ始めているのでした。果たしてアンは、グリーンゲーブルズへ居られることになるのでしょうか？ 高畑勲監督トークショー（２０１０．７．１２カナダ大使館特別試写会にて）
