A scathing look at the dehumanizing effects of war, the 1966 film Red Angel is widely considered to be one of the crowning achievements of director Masumura Yasuzo's long and prolific career, which included classic titles like Blind Beast and All Mixed Up. In charting the spiritual and sexual decline of a young, inexperienced field nurse thrust into the hell of World War II, Masumura crafts an emotionally complex drama with characters who earn sympathy even as their actions repel. Typical of the director's works, Red Angel does not shy away from sometimes frank depictions of sex and violence, but a thoughtful screenplay from Kasahara Ryozo and a moving performance from Japanese screen legend Wakao Ayako prevent the film from falling into the realm of exploitation. On the front lines of the Sino-Japanese War, Nurse Nishi Sakura (Wakao Ayako) spends her days amputating limbs and her nights attempting to avoid sexual assault at the hands of her own patients. Surrounded by wounded soldiers with no will to live and a once-brilliant head surgeon (Ashida Shinsuke) who has become a morphine addict, Nishi desperately seeks any means possible to alleviate the suffering of those around her. Her growing love for the drug-addled doctor may hold the key to his redemption, but at the cost of Nishi's own sexual martyrdom. As the horrors of war close in around them, Nishi fights to reclaim Dr. Okabe's humanity without losing her own in the process.
