江戸、深川蛤町の職人長屋。京の豆腐屋で修行してきた永吉は、桶屋の娘・おふみと出会い、互いに惹かれあう。やがて2人は京豆腐を江戸で売り出すために"京や"という店を持つが、京豆腐はなかなか江戸市民に受け入れられなかった。そんな2人に影ながら力を貸したのは、老舗の豆腐屋を営む清兵衛夫妻。夫妻は豆腐作りに熱中する永吉の姿に、4歳のときに行方知れずになった息子を重ね、ひそかに得意先に"京や"を斡旋するのだが…。
