YesAsia Editorial Description
A young boy surreptitiously watches a fox spirit wedding procession in a forest on a sunny rainy day. Dolls come alive in a treeless peach orchard. A mysterious woman appears to a group of mountaineers caught in an unforgiving blizzard. An army officer encounters the ghosts of his past in a seemingly endless dark tunnel. An art student travels through a world made up of Van Gogh's works, encountering the artist (played by Martin Scorceses) in a field. The sky turns bloody red after a nuclear power plant meltdown, and five people stay behind as everyone flees for the ocean. A man encounters a demon-like man while drifting in a wasted post-apocalyptic land. A young traveler comes to a quiet, idyllic village where the people have decided to return to simpler times to reverse the damage caused by modern technology. Though eight separate stories, the themes and imagery painted in the shorts weave together into a message-laden whole.

Product Information
導演:黑澤明
Director: Akira Kurosawa
Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola and other moviemakers cite him as a primal influence. The Magnificent Seven, A Fistful of Dollars and the Star Wars sagas were inspired by his work. He's Akira Kurosawa, considered one of the 20th-century's greatest film directors.
Akira Kurosawa's Dreams is one of the most visionary, deeply personal works in the 60-year career of the master behind Rasbomon, The Seven Samurai and Ran. Comprised of eight episodes rich in imagery and insight (and featuring Socrses as Vincent Van Gogh), it explores the costs of war, the perils of nuclear power and especially humankind's need to harmonize with nature. You will be enchanted…… and enthralled.

| "Akira Kurosawa's Dreams" is a collection of short subjects or 'dreams', all of which are visually arresting. My favorites are the first two. The first involves a young boy who gets an unauthorized glimpse of a wedding procession of fox spirits. The second shows the same boy witnessing a dance of peach tree spirits. Both of these stories draw strength from their roots in Japanese folklore. The second half of the film is much less successful, as it presents a series of "dreams" that rather clumsily retail a brand of anti-technology, back-to-nature environmentalism. All in all, "Dreams" is well worth watching, but a bit of a disappointment after its great start. |

Kurosawa's second-to-last film is almost like a short story collection, covering subject matters that range from apocalypic and haunting to wonderfully imaginative. The favorite seems to be his playful mini-biography of Vincent Van Gogh, giving the artist a chance to walk through a landscape of his own visual creations. But the most memorable is a simple Japanese ghost story, a period piece that tells of a child destined to become a changeling. Kurosawa has never shown his visual flair to such advantage. While interest does vary from one story to the next, there's always the feeling that you're in the hands of a filmmaker able to tell a story from any time or genre. |
