Breathtaking imagery
| "Akira Kurosawa's Dreams" is a collection of short subjects or 'dreams', all of which are visually arresting. My favorites are the first two. The first involves a young boy who gets an unauthorized glimpse of a wedding procession of fox spirits. The second shows the same boy witnessing a dance of peach tree spirits. Both of these stories draw strength from their roots in Japanese folklore. The second half of the film is much less successful, as it presents a series of "dreams" that rather clumsily retail a brand of anti-technology, back-to-nature environmentalism. All in all, "Dreams" is well worth watching, but a bit of a disappointment after its great start. |

A collection of Kurosawa shorts
|
Kurosawa's second-to-last film is almost like a short story collection, covering subject matters that range from apocalypic and haunting to wonderfully imaginative. The favorite seems to be his playful mini-biography of Vincent Van Gogh, giving the artist a chance to walk through a landscape of his own visual creations. But the most memorable is a simple Japanese ghost story, a period piece that tells of a child destined to become a changeling. Kurosawa has never shown his visual flair to such advantage. While interest does vary from one story to the next, there's always the feeling that you're in the hands of a filmmaker able to tell a story from any time or genre. |

Incredible
| This is one of if not THE best movies I have ever seen! All the depth of every movie buffs favorite Orson Welles movie but much more accesible. I highly recommend it. |
