YesAsia Editorial Description

Director Ridley Scott's breakthough film, an immensely successful blend of horror and science fiction, is a classic in both genres and spawned a host of sequels and imitators. Starring Sigourney Weaver as warrant officer Ellen Ripley, ALIEN focuses on the crew of the space cargo ship Nostromo, which lands on a moribund planet in response to a faint SOS. Inside a crashed ship, the crew members come upon strange pods, one of which spews forth a repellently fleshy insectile creature that locks on to the face of the unlucky Kane (John Hurt). Despite Ripley's advice, science officer Ash (Ian Holm) allows Kane to return to the ship, where the creature finally releases its grip. Soon, however, in one of the film's most infamous scenes, one of its offspring explodes horribly from Kane's stomach and scurries away. Dallas (Tom Skerritt), the vessel's captain, leads the others in a search for the rapidly growing, acid-dripping alien before it can cut them down--one by one. A triumph of art direction, set design, and special effects, ALIEN gains much of its impact from the contrast between the bleak, antiseptic beauty of the space vessel's interior and the primordial horror of the alien, a brilliantly original fusion of insect, man, and machine designed by Swiss surrealist painter H.R. Giger. The top-notch cast also includes Veronica Cartwright, Yaphet Kotto, and Harry Dean Stanton.

Survival of the fittest in outer space
During the close of the 70s and the beginning of the 80s, acclaimed director Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Gladiator) and co-producer Walter Hill (48 Hours, Warriors) staged a terror rendezvous in the galaxy that would come to be known as Alien. Not only did it help to establish Sigourney Weaver (Ghostbusters, Working Girl) as a leading actress, but it also went on to become one of the most enduring sci-fi horror franchises in film history.

Everything begins quite harmlessly as the viewer is introduced to a 7-member space crew on their way back to the blue planet. However, things turn from bad to worse after part of the team returns from an obligatory research trip on an unknown planet. As a result, a strange specimen is able to make its way on board nesting within the body of one of the crew's members. Growing from a small snake-like reptile to an all-devouring monster of immense proportions, the seemingly indestructible being wreaks havoc with the lives of the hapless team members. Providing one of the most solid performances for a female in a heroic role, Weaver's Ripley set the early example for similar characters that followed this trend including T2's Sarah Connor. Ripley's dominance no doubt is only undermined by the peril of the intelligent, yet emotionless Alien, preying on its victims in the obscure niches and corners of the spaceship Nostromo. As for the rest of Alien's well-matched cast including Veronica Cartwright, Yaphet Kotto, Ian Holm, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt and Tom Skerritt, their solid performances further assist the credibility of this gut-wrenching sci-fi horror odyssey.

The setting, mostly centered in the Nostromo imbued in sterile artificial colors, adds to the underlying tension of the story, most effectively in the climax of the movie featuring a chase through the spaceship which is about to self-destruct. An all-deciding showdown, during which Scott skillfully utilized pulsating light effects to overshadow the scenario of the monster closing in on the last survivors (including a cat called Jones), concludes this thrilling space nightmare.

Featuring a striking monster design by H. R. Giger, an atmospheric score by Jerry Goldsmith in combination with a well-crafted suspenseful plot that manages to keep the audience in terrified disbelief until the relieving end-title credits appear, Alien presents a cinematic classic that dares to be explored.
